Simple, easy, and smart-seeming guards for weep holes

[Color: Weep Hole Covers-40 PCS]
These weep hole covers seem like an ingenious method of blocking entry for small creatures while still allowing proper airflow through the walls. The installation is easy enough as far as this product's side goes - if you have sloppy mortar you'll have to spend some time cleaning that up, but that's no fault of the covers. These are about 1/2" shorter than my particular weep holes, because the mortar is clear from the brick below to the brick above the weep hole. The covers themselves are about 1/4" taller than the size of my bricks, but centering the cover leaves the space reasonably protected. If the mortar lines were even with the bricks, it would be easy to use some snips to trim the covers to fit. They seem to be decent stainless steel. They're thin enough to compress easily by hand and substantial enough to spring back and hold securely. A rubber mallet makes installation easy as long as there's no stray mortar in the weep hole. They are punched from sheet stock, so some burred edges that border on sharp are present - take care or wear gloves when installing, and it won't have any effect once the covers are installed.I opted not to use the steel wool because it's not stainless and will surely rust in my humid area, and if it were packed too tightly it could stop proper ventilation. Take it and use it elsewhere or for cleaning.

Blocks weep holes with both a screen and steel woolBlocks weep holes with both a screen and steel...

The pieces fit with little adjustment, the screens hold in place with the natural spring action of the metal. The screens can be cut with regular aviation snips. Get the height you need and cut to size, install by squeezing together and insert in the weep hole in your brick, easy-peasy. If you have small insects you are concerned about you can fill behind the screen with some steel-wool that is included. Stainless steel screen is a quality material for this use and lasts a long time. I think this should be standard with the construction of a brick face on a home like mine.

Nice, Easy to Use - Only Time Will Tell

[Color: Weep Hole Covers-30 PCS]
I've wanted to use these for a number of years, as we have had some uninvited visitors sneak into our house and my main suspicion as to what caused it was the weep holes. So this was an excellent opportunity to try these out.First off, this is a weekend project. You need to fully expect that. And you will need several tools to make this work. These are cut for average weep hole sizes, but they still require a lot of fitting. For my situation, these were about 1/4th inch too large. I was able to use aviation snippers to clip the ends, but you will still need to clean up any mortar or debris inside the weepholes first.Installation is easy enough. Bend the cover until it fits the hole and either it slips in, or it doesn't. I used a rubber mallet to help ease it in. You don't want this too snug, as it can cause the covers to deform - but too loose, and the covers will fall out. This also came with some steel wool. Absolutely DO NOT USE THE STEEL WOOL!!! As others have said, this is untreated steel wool and will rust in no time, BUT, it also will negate a lot of the reason for weep holes. As you may or may not know, weep holes help your brick facade to drain water after a storm. But it also serves to allow air to circulate between the interior and exterior of your home to prevent dampness and mold/mildew. If you 100% plug the holes with this wool, you will completely negate that affect and suffer from it.I only installed a handful of these and will give it a couple seasons to see if the covers begin to rust. If they do, I will update my review at that time.
