4 JAW REVERSIBLE CHUCK

This 4=inch wood lather chuck comes with 1x8TPI threading and fits on my smaller Jet lathe easily. It includes 2 nylon washers, so the chuck is easier to remove from the lathe when done which is a nice addition as I have always had to get nylon washers separately. There is also an included Allen wrench to lock the chuck to the lathe spindle if doing reverse turning so the chuck doesn't become loose.The two included handles come in two pieces with the metal part needing to be screwed onto the plastic handles. I did use a thread lock on them to keep the handles from twisting off. I do with the red handle portion was slightly narrower as the do contact each other when the two handles meet during tightening or loosening. However, there are multiple spots around the chuck to put the handles into to avoid this contact.The wood lathe chuck itself is solidly built and well-machined. Once I loosened and tightened it completely a couple times the threading was incredibly smooth. The jaws hold various turning pieces well and centered with no observed wobble. The reversing function of the jaws is a nice feature and easy to change from one mode to the other in a very short amount of time. The chuck was well oiled, and the metal was all in excellent condition with good surface finishing and I expect it to last for many years of use. I am pleased with this chuck's performance, value, and quality.

I've been wanting to wood lathe chuck for quite some time and I'm glad that I picked this one up. This chuck is really good quality. It is very durable and heavy duty. I'll be honest I am a novice, so for me it is working out just fine. I don't know if other more experienced people would agree, but I really enjoy using this. It fit perfectly in my old 4ft wood lathe (don't know the brand, besides rust year wood shavings from previous owner.) It is really easily adjustable and stays put once you get it cranked down. It is very stable also. I love it and I would buy another one if I needed to. I recommend you try it out.

Its really hard to get anything level with this. Im pretty new to wood turning but it seems a lot harder then it should be. Its very heavy, which is good for how it's made but not so much for trying to use it. It is easy to adjust and use but like I said it just doesnt want to hold things straight. Could be user error tho.

I already had a 4 inch lathe chuck that uses a key and I wanted to find out what it's like to use a chuck that twists to tighten. I also thought it would be good to have a chuck with jaws that would hold smaller work pieces than my other one.I was impressed when I took this chuck out of the box. It's heavy with nicely machined surfaces. The chuck is sturdy and works smoothly. The jaws stay centered and grip well for straight jaws. I like that the jaws are numbered so I can reassemble this correctly when I change the jaw direction. I also like that there are lock screws so I can safely reverse turn with this chuck. The chuck comes with two anti-jam washers which make it easier to remove the chuck and they work well.My chuck came with one set of jaws. I think you can see this in the pictures in the listing, but aware these are straight jaws. They are not dovetail jaws. The straight jaws don't hold the work piece from coming off as well as dovetail jaws and should probably mostly be used with a tail stock or some other device to prevent the work piece from moving off the chuck. I used the chuck so far to drill pieces on the lathe. Even with the drill bit pushing the work piece toward the chuck, one of my work pieces started to come off and I had to tighten the chuck a second time.Another thing to note is that you need two hands to tighten this chuck unless you can lock your lathe spindle. If this is on the lathe, it's a bit hard to hold some work pieces while tightening the jaws. It's easier with the chuck off the lathe. With a keyed chuck you can tighten the jaws with one hand while you hold the work piece with the other. However the keyed chuck is slower to open and close or to change jaws. Each has it's merits.I'm very pleased with this chuck and jaws. I own other lathe products by this maker and I'm very happy with all of them.
