Previous closures we've had thar did not meet ADA compliance did not work and were ineffective with my wheelchair. However, this closer is great, it's a balance between a commercial quality but also offers home user functionality at an affordable price. This door closer is just like I remember from government buildings back in the past century, like my school for instance. This closer is rock-solid and has a fully adjustable action. It can be set to close at a specific speed, to latch with more or less effort and to use more or less force. It is designed in a utilitarian way and has a rather flimsy, by comparison, housing that I was a bit disappointed with.I would prefer a metal housing that looks a bit more substantial, but it is a design aesthetic, so no stars removed. The installation was a bit of a worry, as it is more than a bit of a powerful mechanism. But, I think that was more because neither hubby or I had ever done anything like this. We installed it on the side-door to our garage, so it can't be left open on accident.It only took about an hour and we used a ladder to do most of the work. But, we did not need to remove the door, so it was worth it. The housing is quite heavy and we thought the hardest part was holding it in place until we had it screwed-in tight.Once we got it assembled, adjusted and working well, we could easily tell it was worth every penny. This is the last one of these we will need for this door, and it really was easy to adjust so that it closes the door just right for us.I would whole-heartedly recommend this to anyone looking for a door closing mechanism.

Once mounted at the top of the door frame, the articulated arm pulled the door closed smoothly without the sharp slam I had been dealing with.After a few days I adjusted the closing speed slightly with the small hex adjustment ports on the end. A quarter turn made a noticeable difference. Now the door pulls itself closed in about three seconds from halfway open, which feels controlled without being slow. One moment that confirmed the value was during a gusty afternoon when the wind pushed the door open wide and let go. Instead of snapping shut like before, the closer caught it and guided it down steadily until the latch clicked.One small detail I noticed while using this is the subtle hydraulic resistance when opening the door. There is a firm but smooth pushback from the arm as the internal mechanism compresses. It is not difficult to open, but you can feel the damping working.The main limitation is weight and size. This is clearly designed with commercial doors in mind, so it looks a bit oversized on a standard residential door. It also requires solid mounting points since the body itself is fairly heavy.This closer works best for exterior doors that deal with wind, frequent traffic, or situations where slamming is a problem.
