We have livestock that has learned to unlatch their gates. Okay, it is just our donkey, Burrito, that has learned this skill. And it is with any of the clasps, snaps, hooks, etc that she can bite and manipulate. She then lets some of our other animals out and get into the tack shed and feed room. Smart animal. I can't have random animals roaming the neighborhood, so we had to order a bunch of these type of gate latches. She can't open them! Hooray. Not that she didn't try, and they unhappily bray at it.The two way farm gate latch is attached to a farm gate and a wood post. They are very heavy but are very easy to install. I just used a drill and made sure that the slots lined up. That is a very important part. I did it without lining it up and it was a hilarious disaster. The farm gate latch latches easily by itself and is easy to unlatch by lifting the metal pin and pushing the gate forward. I like that I can move the gate forward or backward through the opening and isn't set for just one way. So far, with pushing from the donkey and horse, repeated use and constant latching and unlatching, it has kept its durability. Pretty good for an outside gate latch.

They are perfect for a bar ranch gate. They are well made and easy to install.

Good points: This is very well made out of stout, thick steel. It is, as described by the seller, as truly "heavy duty." It shows an excellent level of craftsmanship. There are no sharp edges. The holes for the mounting screws are aligned and uniform. Care has been taken to made sure the welds are clean, uniform, and all slag and splatter has been removed. The painted finish is applied well with no spots of no paint or a low amount of paint. It seems to be powder coated but I am not sure of that. The bars which hold the latch closed are easy to use (no binding) and keep the latch secure. I have a rural property with lots of tube steel gates which are now pushing nearly 40 years in age. Some of the gate latches have seen a better day. This latch has done an excellent job of retiring one of those old soldiers. It is very easy to install. The option of being able to secure the latch with a padlock is very nice and gives me peace of mind the gates will stay closed while I am away from the ranch.Weak points (sort of): The screws provided are of a good diameter but only 1 3/4 inches in length. Because the gates are sometimes slammed shut, I used longer screws to keep the latch securely in place for the long term. This is probably over engineering on my part. Also, there is not provision (meaning a hole) to lift the latching arms in the open position and lock them in that open position. Curing those two situations would deserve an upgrade to 5 stars.Bad points: None.An excellent buy.

I got this to use on a new gate we are putting in for preparation for getting goats. I had no idea how many tools and planning were needed for a "simple" t-post and woven wire fence would be, so we are behind schedule, but this is going to work well for our gat when we finally get to that point. I have already held it up around our gate panel and it should work as intended. Having a place for a padlock is an added bonus. It is really heavy and I was trying to figure out what could possibly be in the boxes before I opened it that would be so heavy. I really like that there is a bit of leeway in how it will still work if things aren't 100% perfectly aligned which was an immediate issue with the last fence we put in. The listing price of $19.99 at the time of ordering seems very fair for the quality and durability of this item and it is much more substantial than anything I could have gotten in store near me.

This lock is strong! You feel like you are doing a workout just carrying it around. It is made of very thick metal and yet it all still operates fluidly.I am just using it for my goat transfer corridor. It feels considerably oversized for my needs. It works terrific with standard corral panels. I'm sure this would contain horses, donkeys, and probably even average cattle very well. I like how the controls are on the top and extended so you can unlatch it with ease. It's terrific when you are wearing gloves. I hate the lock like this that have the levelers or rollers right at the latch. I always get my gloves stuck in them or pinch my fingers. That is not a problem with this lock.It's a very affordable lock for the quality. I would make one suggestion though: Reinforce the keepers/latch fingers just a bit more; give them a little extra material to press against the gate. If you did have something heavy really slam into this door, the current pins might bend, smash, or deform. They are still strong without a doubt though. If this change was made, I feel it would be considerably underpriced for what it has.One last note. I am using it for goats, and they are escape artists. The pin handles are very nice, but I have noticed them trying to unlock themselves already. I keep a linchpin in the padlock hole just as a security measure.

Alright so I have this driveway gate that has refused multiple attempts at repair, and really the problem is and has been that the entire section of fence needs to be redone. One night, I rage-ordered this after having to re-close the gate a half dozen times in a 30 minute period, because it was the biggest, gnarliest, no-nonsense gate latch I have come across. It is also for a style of fence that I have never even owned, which I realized when I unboxed it.The problem is, when requesting items through Amazon Vine to review, there is no process to return things, and the only option is to ask it to be stricken from your review quota if for some reason you can't review it. I have only done that in the case of items that arrived damaged, because ultimately its unfair to the seller that they send out a product for review and end up with nothing all because I ordered an item I can't actually use.So, I found a use for it that allows for me to review it on all the same characteristics I would have tested as a gate latch...by basically destroying it, and turning it into a shoehorn to remove muddy boots :)First off, this thing is HEAVY. It needs to be, since its actual intent is for use on a cattle gate. The latch hooks are made of stainless steel, while the housing is given a very thick coat of glossy paint which helps prevent rust as well as keep the latch hooks operating smoothly in cold or damp environments. It took longer than I expected it would to grind off the paint to expose bare metal so that it could be welded. I went through 3 60 grit sanding discs on the angle grinder by the time it was all said and done.I had also used an angle grinder on the interior angles of the two latch hooks to make a V shape to accommodate a boot heel, then I fully extended them and welded them securely to the latch housing in which they reside.Next, I didn't have any sheet steel of comparable thickness to weld onto the back side of the latch plate to make a step to stand on with one foot while removing the other boot, so I layered several thin pieces from a welding practice kit onto it and tack welded them in place, then went over all the joints to secure it permanently.Then I cleaned up the welds, repainted it, and as you'll see in the photos, came away with a product that does in fact remove a shoe, even without untying it.Was this the assignment? No.Is it an acceptable compromise under the circumstances? Yes, I think so, because working with the steel gave me a lot of insight into its durability, and if you are shopping for a latch for the gate that keeps your cows from wandering off, durability is going to be the first thing you care about, with maintenance considerations and ease of use coming afterward.Will it hold firm against a charging bull? Probably not repeatedly, no. It would likely hold up to the first one, yeah. But how pissed off is this bull we're talking about? If he's just testing the gate, you'll be fine. If he's after YOU...he'll probably be coming, one way or another.Even if something does damage it or break one of the latch hooks, which would probably be the thing that fails, given enough force or repeated slams, what I have proven in my re-purposing of it is that you can pretty much beat the hell out of this thing and it will still be repairable because it is easy to weld, even if you need to add additional steel for some reason. And once you finally do retire it in favor of some as-yet-unknown improved option, you can give it a second life as a shoehorn, or a doorstop. Bookends for a bookshelf. A wheel chock for a tractor. Whatever else might come to mind.If you've got a gate that is within the scope of what this is designed to fit on, you'll probably be well served by it for several years. I didn't realize I couldn't use it as that, but I did have quite a bit of fun finding a workaroud that allowed me to review the item by making it do something else.
