Replacing the resin cartridge in a water softening system

To begin, this is the first time we’ve ever used resin and this type of water softener. We purchased our own blue canister, and reusable filter cartridge to put this in. So far so good, and it works wonderfully at its job. I do have to manually recharge the resin every month or so, so in time I will update this review with how long I deem the resin to be lasting.. But keep in mind, this is our first ever use of resin, so my review may be skewed in that direction.When adding this to the reusable filter, it was easier than I’d like to pop the little balls of resin. And that may be wholly normal for resin, I do not know. Just be delicate with the product so you don’t pop them.The reason this bag of resin was so attractive is that it is the perfect amount we needed for a 20 inch, blue canister, water softener filter. If you go to any of your big box construction stores, they sell this in twice the amount. Because I didn’t want to spend the amount for twice as much product as I needed, this product fit the bill for me.

The ion exchange beads have desirable ions loosely bonded to the resin. As water flows through with less desirable ions (say, calcium and magnesium) the ions from the beads (say, sodium) chemically replace them. The calcium and magnesium attaches to the beads.Eventually the beads get to be full other stuff and not the sodium, so your water softener flushes them in salt to remove the other stuff and recharge the sodium. Eventually the resin beads may need to be replaced, and then you can just use this product. Don't buy a whole new water softener.This bag may be more than enough to replace the beads in your water softener, depending on its size. It's standard maintenance. Imagine if you had to trade your car in because you couldn't change the oil, or add gasoline.If your issue is iron, rather than calcium and magnesium, Filterelated makes gray colored beads for that.
