Uncoupling Membrane for Tile and Stone Application

I ordered this for a bathroom remodel project. The 54 sq ft membrane was plenty for my application. The back side has a thin foam vapor barrier and the main material is made from a stamped harder plastic material. If you are installing ceramic tiles or stone over concrete or wood subfloors, this decoupling mat is a good choice to keep and flexing or cracking of the subfloor from transferring to you newly installed tiles. The material will also work for overlaying a heated floor system. It curled up very slightly when unrolled but lay down flat once embedded into the thinset. the quality seems to be just as good as other underpayments I’ve used but at a much better price making it a good value. It cut very easily with a blade and scissors. time will tell how good a job it does, but form what i see I do not expect any problems with this membrane.

I recently received this uncoupling membrane and will be using it as part of our new home build for our tile installation. Since we are building in a coastal environment, preventing cracks from transferring through to the finished tile is very important to us, so an uncoupling membrane was something we planned to use from the beginning. The membrane measures a true 1/8 inch thick and the 54 square feet of coverage is exactly as listed. Before installing it throughout the project, we tested a section to see how it handled thinset adhesion and waterproofing. The membrane laid flat easily, was simple to cut with a utility knife, and embedded well into the thinset. The surface pattern filled nicely with mortar, providing a solid base for tile. We also tested it with water after sealing the seams, and it performed exactly as expected with no water penetration. I like that it creates both a crack isolation layer and a waterproof surface when installed correctly, eliminating the need for multiple separate products. We will also be using a matching waterproof seam tape and corner pieces around our built-in shower bench, so everything works together as one complete waterproofing system. The material feels durable without being difficult to work with, and it rolled out flat without wanting to curl back up. Based on our testing, I feel comfortable using this throughout our project. I feel this is comparable to other name brand membranes on the market but at a better value. For the quality, ease of installation, and protection it provides beneath tile, I feel this is an excellent value.
