Ryoba Saw 8" for Hardwood

It's fundamentally a hand saw and it works. It's not really better or worse than any other decent quality hand saw. It's nice that it has fine and coarse teeth but I don't ever find myself quickly or repetitively switching between fine and coarse teeth when woodworking, so it's honestly not that different than having two saws. The shape I don't think adds anything to the functionality over a straight hand saw. The flat blade is useful for flush cuts, and the blade is flexible which is useful for getting otherwise tricky flush cuts. The replaceable blade is good and bad: it means you can just replace the blade rather than the whole saw or sharpening it, but there is a slight bit of play in the joint, although it doesn't negatively impact the function of the saw very much.Overall a good saw if it compares favorably in price to other saws you're looking at, but I wouldn't pay any premium for the shape of the saw over a flat saw or the double sided blade over 2 individual saws.

Great pullsaw for both rip and cross cuts. Makes a clean and accurate cut across both the soft and hardwoods I've used it on so far. Good size to get a decent stroke, and also small enough for easy storage. The blade is thick enough to be sturdy while cutting, but leave a small kerf. Also I love that I can replace the blade later as needed. Overall a great product that's easy to use - happy with my purcahse!

Great Japanese saw, I always recommend people try these if they are getting into hand tool woodworking and struggling with traditional western saws. Also they make great flush cuts for trim, etc. Overall quality is good and sharp, the straight handle is a little weird from the US perspective but it works fine. The cross cut and rip cut double edges really make this a great all-in-one saw too.

The blade is flexible and both sides cut really well. It is easy to cut flush with the saw. It works well with both hard and soft woods. I have a couple similar saws, and this one cuts cleaner than they do. The only downside is the handle. It is molded plastic. It doesn’t feel as nice as a wood handle. I’m either going to make a wood handle for it or wrap the plastic with a cloth tape.The saw cuts well, is a good size, and will be used often. Other than the plastic handle it is a great saw.

I’m a novice wood worker and have been longing for a solution to using a power saw like my jigsaw or even my miter saw to do a quick little accurate cut. Recently a YouTube video introduced me to the world of Japanese pull saws and I was intrigued with the accuracy, sharpness and speed. So I wanted to try one for myself.I saw this Suizan double edged 8” saw so I thought I’d order it and give it a whirl. Turns out it has changed the game for me! I love this little mighty saw. While I have not had an opportunity to make real time use of it on an actual project, I’ve toyed with it on 2 x 4s making intricate cuts and this thing has proven to be like a scalpel! I can draw a straight line by simply scoring with a pencil and then putting the saw blade on the line and pulling back slightly. After that little groove is made I can effortlessly pull right through it with remarkable speed. I can see cutting off the excess tops of dowels with accuracy and ease as well as cutting perfectly straight lines in some instances where I’d go to the miter saw. I also love how comfortable it feels in the hand. The handle has a rubber-ish kind of feel to it whilst the overall tool is lightweight yet feels ultra premium! I also appreciate that the blade can be swapped out for a new one when it dulls, so you don’t have to get an all new saw. This thing is a very welcomed tool to my workshop! I am really looking forward to using it in up and coming projects and feel confident it will be both a convenient and ultra effective alternative - in some instances - to the power tools I would used otherwise.At the time of this writing this 8” SUIZAN Ryoba Double Edge Saw lists for $39.80, which seems to fall in the median ball park in the pricing scheme of competitive Japanese pull saws I’ve researched on Amazon. So, while it’s not an ultra bargain price, it’s certainly not over priced and in my humble opinion, it’s well worth the asking price. One thing to note is that it will only take the company’s proprietary replacement blade, which, at the time of this writing is $21. Only time will tell how much use and abuse the blade will take over time, but if it can hold up for a decent amount of use over a year that will determine for me if the price of the replacement blade is truly worth it or if it’s just more economical to look elsewhere for a new saw. That being said I highly recommend this saw and am awarding it 5 stars!

I have really enjoyed using this Japanese pull saw and it has quickly become one of my favorite hand tools in the shop. The blade is authentically made in Japan, and the quality shows in both the tempering and the tooth geometry. It is extremely sharp and cuts hardwoods with surprising ease, while still being gentle enough on thin softwoods to keep tear out to a minimum.This 8 inch Ryoba style blade has a finer tooth spacing than some of my other Japanese saws, which I have found ideal for detailed work like dovetails and small joinery. The higher tooth count gives very smooth crosscuts and controlled rip cuts, and it is much less likely to grab or tear fibers when working with thin stock. Because it cuts on the pull stroke, it feels accurate and easy to control, and the overall length gives a good balance between long, efficient strokes and precise handling.The handle is where I was pleasantly surprised. I love the traditional look of rattan, but the modern rubberized plastic grip on this saw actually provides a better user experience. It stays put in your hand, feels comfortable during extended use, and gives very good control. The replaceable blade system is cleverly engineered: loosening a single knurled knob lets you slide the blade out, and tightening it back in pulls the blade securely into the handle so everything feels rock solid. Replacement blades are available, which helps keep the long term cost reasonable, even if you are tied to this brand’s tang shape.I mainly reach for this saw when I need clean flush cuts, trimming dowels, or cleaning up joinery, but it has also handled general crosscut and rip tasks in hardwood without complaint.
