The KEENTECH 45° lock miter router bit (½ in shank, 2¾ in diameter) is massive with a solid twin wing design. It is perfectly balanced and cuts cleanly and reproducibly with excellent joint results. The advantage of the 2.75 in. version is its ability to handle up to 1 inch stock. If your router has enough HP (mine is 2.25 HP which works perfectly) and your router table can handle the 2¾ in. girth of the bit, I’d recommend strongly considering the larger version since it can also handle the thinner stock (picture of a joint with 7/16 stock). I don’t think I’d want to rely on it for 3/8 in. stock (I didn’t have an appropriate sample to try) but the option to go over ¾ in. is important for me.Getting good results with any lock miter bit requires significant attention to detail. I strongly recommend only using on a router table, preferably with an adjustable lift you can change easily since fiddling with small adjustments in the height of the bit are key to getting a perfect joint. The stock needs to be kept perfectly flat on the table and up tightly against the fence to get reproducible results. Feather boards are recommended. Set up is not difficult but it does require a series of steps and a little patience. The bit does not come with any instructions such as the mid-point of the cutter which I use in the set up making the first time setup a little more difficult. I used ¾ inch MDF to set it up (for its perfect thickness) and included a cross-table picture to give a rough idea of the height for ¾ stock and the mid-position for other size stock. The flat top of the bit is almost exactly 7/8 in. off the table when set up correctly. The height of the bit needs to be established before the final fence position for the depth of the cut. My set up steps: 1. Align the center of the flat stock to the approx. center point of the cutting edge of the bit (or 7/8 in. off the table for ¾ in. stock), 2. Roughly set fence so the edge of the stock set vertically against the fence extends roughly to the front edge of the cutter. 3. Make 2 in. test cuts at the end of a sample board to check fit. Measure the height difference between the 2 sides and adjust the height by ½ the difference (move the bit down if the lower side has the long top edge as shown in the picture). Repeat the tests until the 2 sides align perfectly flat. 4. If there is a gap between the 2 sides when they are flat (see picture), the fence needs adjustment. Place the bit with the major cutting-edge perpendicular to fence, the stock vertically against the fence and with a straight edge running along the face of the stock past the bit. Lock fence with the edge just touching the angled cutter edge. Now the match should be perfect. Make a template for the exact thickness of the stock for easy set-up next time (picture). For hardwood on ¾-1 in. stock, using a 1/4 in. sacrificial fence would make a cleaner final joint.I strongly recommend this versatile tool. Based on its performance, design and finish, I expect to be using this bit for many years to come.

OMG, I did not realize the size of this bit until I opened the package. The KEENTECH 45° Lock Miter Router Bit is much larger than I expected, but that is not necessarily a bad thing since I would use this more with wider wood anyway.I have never used an interlocking router bit before, and this one did not come with instructions. Thankfully, in the internet age, it is not too hard to figure out how it is supposed to work. The bit came in a nice plastic storage box instead of the typical plastic bag covered in grease. It was clean right out of the box, which gives a much better first impression than some cheaper bits I have purchased before.The bit plastic case opens at a 45-degree angle, and the plastic top of the case comes off easily, I wish other bits came like this. I ran it on my router, and it felt perfectly balanced. The steel is thick, the cutting edges look clean, and nothing about it feels cheap, which is what I would expect at this price range.I tested it on a scrap piece of wood, and it made a clean cut. I am looking forward to using it on future joints to see how much of an advantage the interlocking shape provides. In theory, the extra surface area should make for a stronger glue joint, and the fit should help with alignment compared to a plain miter.Overall, this is a solid router bit and much larger than I expected, but in a good way. Just be aware that it does not include instructions, so you may want to look up setup guidance before using it for the first time.

Nice bit, but be careful with the diameter

There are neither instructions nor templates for using this bit, but if you have used other corner bits, you know the drill. Get scrap of the same thickness as your project. Experiment with the variables, e.g., bit height, fence position, etc. until you get a good joint. When you have got it right, make templates that you can use for quick setups in the future. You have to invest some time in the first setup, but after that templates make for quick setups.Large bits need to be well balanced and this one is. Most of the time I run the router table with an extension for the bits. This means the bit is even further from the motor than normal. This will exacerbate any wobble in an unbalanced bit. This bit runs smooth without vibrations at both slow and high speeds. Since a frequent task is making crosscuts on drawer box sides, I prefer slow feed, but high speed. The bit is sharp and runs fine at high speed, but watch your feed rate. Push it a little too fast and it will not make a clean cut and your stock will be pushed out from the router bit.I ordered this bit because it can be used on the thickness range I often use---1/2” to 1 inch. Unfortunately, it will take some extra steps to use it on thinner stock. I ordered the 2-3/4” out of force of habit, but I should have ordered the narrower diameter. I have other bits this size and run them on my Freud table and 3-1/4hp router with no issues. What I forgot is then when I pop off the larger plastic throat plate, so I can lower the bit below the table top, the hole in the table top is wider than the base of the router. The consequence is that I can only lower the large 2-3/4” bit just a little below the table surface before hitting the router, but you need to lower it more than this for thinner stock.My work around will work for box drawers but not large panels---clamps get in the way. I used my router crosscut sled to make the first cut with the stock flat on the router table. The side benefit of this is the stock is securely clamped and the cut is perfect. The sled base is ¾” thick so I clamped a piece of ¾” plywood to the router tabletop with a notch for the bit. Then I made the pass with the stock in the vertical position. After one tweak of the fence distance, I had a perfect joint.Other than the storage case, I am impressed with this Keentech bit and would not hesitate from trying another in the future. My storage area for bits is a little crowed, so I am not a big fan of this bit’s large plastic storage can.

This 45° lock miter router bit is huge and sharp and very heavy duty. It’s made with high quality materials and it’s very durable. It has no problems at all cutting through soft or hardwoods and they offer very little resistance to it. The only issue is that the 1/2” shank isn’t perfectly perpendicular so the rest of the bit. This causes issues while using the router such as the bit getting snagged occasionally and the cuts don’t line up perfectly when you go to lock them in. Maybe this is just a fluke and only on this defective bit but just check it first. If the shank wasn’t off it’d be a great deal for the price.

I already own a more budget-friendly set of locking miter bits. That set came with three different sizes and was still a little cheaper than this one single bit. To be fair, those cheaper bits are actually pretty decent for the price.But this bit is noticeably nicer.The first thing you notice is the size. This thing is gargantuan, which is exactly what I want in a locking miter bit. These joints require removing a lot of material, so I want a bit that feels beefy enough for the job. This one definitely does.The fit and finish are excellent. The carbide looks clean, the coating looks good, and the whole bit feels like a serious piece of tooling rather than a cheap accessory. It fit in my 2-1/4 HP corded router without any issue, and I was impressed that there was no noticeable runout, especially given the size of the bit.Setup is always the tricky part with locking miter bits. That is not really a flaw of this specific bit; it is just the nature of this style of cutter. You need to get the height and fence position dialed in carefully, and test cuts are pretty much part of the process. Another reviewer mentioned a clever trick of using a sacrificial fence to take a lighter first pass, then removing it for the final cut. I had not thought of doing it that way before, but I will definitely be using that approach going forward.Once dialed in, this bit cuts cleanly and leaves a nice finish. This review is for a 45° lock miter router bit with tungsten carbide cutters, a 1/2" shank and a 2-11/64" diameter, branded as KEENTECH and sold by as KEENTECH Industries. This bit is designed to make lock joints in wood between 3/8" and 3/4" thick. The listing says the cutters are made of industrial grade tungsten carbide with a 10X lifespan, but no further details on the specific type of carbide are provided. It also mentions a heat resistant anti-stick coating, again without further specifics. The casting, machining and finish of this bit appears to be very well done. Only use over time will tell about the ultimate quality of the carbide and coating. I have not made enough cuts to make any statements about longevity. So far, cuts have been clean, without any burning, chatter or tearout. This bit runs steady without any vibration.Lock joints have two primary advantages compared to a butt or miter joint. One is that the increased surface area for glue plus interlocking shapes result in a significantly stronger joint. The other is that the self aligning nature of the joint makes clamping much easier.Set up of this bit requires precise adjustments to achieve a correct lock joint, and is determined by the thickness of the wood. First set the bit height. The shape of the cutting edge at the middle part of this bit is like a squished down Z shape with the points cut away. The objective is to position the very center of the Z shape of the cutting edge exactly at the center of your workpiece thickness. Next set the fence so that the cut line of the 45° miter part of the cutter passes through the plane of the fence face at the exact height of the thickness of your work piece. I use a straight piece of wood on top of my workpiece as an aid.Cut two test pieces, flip one over and check the vertical alignment. If the two pieces don't align perfectly vertically, the height difference is 2X the needed bit height adjustment. Get the height correct first then set the fence because the fence adjustment depends on the height. Once the height is set, if the tip of the 45° cut is truncated, move the fence for a deeper cut. If the fence is set too deeply, you will be reducing the size of your workpiece and throwing off the side length when making a square or rectangular box. After you have the bit set up correctly, cut a block to keep as an aid for future setups for that thickness workpiece.This bit removes a lot of wood when cutting a 3/4" thick work piece. I suggest adding an auxiliary fence about 1/4" thick, which will reduce the volume of wood cut away by about 1/2. Your primary fence should remain in its correctly set position without making any changes. Make all your first passes then remove the auxiliary fence to complete the cutting.Despite the images in the listing suggesting use handheld or on a CNC machine, I think for making corner lock miter joints this bit needs to be used on a router table. One half of the joint is made with the axis of the bit perpendicular to the plane of the workpiece. That half could be done on a CNC machine and might be done handheld with an attached fence. The other half of the joint is made with the axis of the bit parallel to the plane of the workpiece. That cut cannot be readily accomplished handheld with a fence attached or on most flat table CNC machines.In my opinion, this is a good quality, useful bit at a reasonable price!

Even a 1/64" height error can leave the joint misaligned. Make several test cuts in scrap before cutting your actual parts.You might be thinking why I choose the smaller 1 3/4 bit over the larger 2 3/4. Because its the bit you will probably use 95% of the time. It is the standard size for 3/4" hardwood and plywood (not ideal for lock miter joint except Baltic Birch) construction.The larger 2-3/4" is used only when you're building with 1" or thicker stock and want the extra glue surface and mechanical strength. It also demands a more powerful router and a very rigid router table.In short:1-3/4" bit = cabinetmaker's lock miter.2-3/4" bit = furniture and architectural joinery for thick stock.Unless you expect to build full-size entry doors or large solid-wood chests, buy the 1-3/4" bit first. It will cover the vast majority of woodworking projects.Use a router table with a fence and featherboards.
