I recently added new doorknobs to my interior doors. But the old ones were so out of date they didn’t use the same size holes as new door knobs do. I tried doing it without this, and the results were not great. I got this kit and fixed what I’d done previously, and got all the new knobs on the doors and working great. Quick and easy. The kit made it faster and easier, and more importantly, it actually worked flawlessly.

This is a little better than measuring marking and eyeballing. But for the price it is a nice little kit. Gets the job done. Not super precise, but most lock or hardware doesn't need to be exact. Just make sure you get that. 1-in bore straight and square with the edge, especially on those instant 3/8 doors.

This door lock installation jig comes with the door jig, a 1"-hole saw, a 2-1/8" hole saw, 2 screws, and an Allen wrench. It does not though come with any directions that would be helpful for a beginner to reference, so just make sure to understand the directions from the product pictures and perhaps print them out to keep with the kit. Beyond that though, this kit makes the occasional DIY door handle drilling quite easy. There are better solutions for professionals out there, but for a DIY person this is a solid choice. The plastic material of the jig is sufficient for its purpose. It will be durable enough for many uses.The door jig changes between the available door thicknesses and depths using the included wrench by either flipping over the two wings of the jig or adjusting the spacing using the four set screws on the jig. Both bi-metal hole saws are sharp and perform well in standard doors and cut cleanly. Just make sure to drill the doorknob from both sides rather than just one side for better alignment and it prevents blowing out one side. For the value of this kit, it is an easy choice for a DIY over fiddling with marking a blank door or using a paper template that comes with the doorknob hardware.

If you have ever had to install a deadbolt or door knob into a door that isn’t pre-drilled, you know having a jig to accomplish the task is key. Previously, I had tried using a hole saw and the paper template to cut the hole, and while it worked, I wouldn’t recommend doing it that way. I was off a bit and it made installation that much more difficult. The second time I attempted this, I chose to rent a tool at the local hardware store to align the knob more correctly. This tool was a metal jig and respective hole saws. It made all the difference in the world.This unit comes with all the necessary parts to complete the task. A jig, two different hole saws and two screws to set the unit onto the door. The jig is good for a knob/deadbolt depth of 2 3/4” or 2 3/8”. It easily slides and locks to meet the chosen depth and the arrows on the side of the numbers indicate your choice. After screwing in the unit on the latch portion of the door, you will be able to drill both the knob/deadbolt hold and then the latch hole in the door without removing the unit.My only concern with this unit is that while it is a strong plastic, it is plastic. Thus, any error in drilling will result in damage to the jig. You will need to be careful when you start the hole using the hole saw to make sure you are centered on the jig and drill straight and level. While I am pretty good at making straight and level holes with my drill, any offset will result in the hole saw hitting the jig on the opposite side.To test the unit, I found a 2 x 8 and used it as a solid core door proxy. The first thing that I noticed is that the jig doesn’t have adjustments for the thickness of the door. This meant that I needed to mark the center line of the door and center the mounting screws along this line. I could have added shims, but that means that you will always have to have the appropriate shims with you when you use this jig. (As a side note, the 2 x 8 was slightly thicker than most interior doors, but by only 1/16”.) I began drilling using the included hole saw, but decided to switch to a name brand hole saw about of a 3rd of the way in the process. The included hole saw is really dull and just didn’t cut into the wood well, which is really disappointing since if I didn’t have an adequate replacement, I would have not been able to cut through the wood in a reasonable amount of time. Once through, I did note some minor damage to the jig as the original hole saw had become very hot and started to score the plastic jig. Drilling the latch hole was similar as the hole saw included was not very sharp. I didn’t have the required size for replacement, so I had to use the one that was included. This led to the wood burning as I drilled through. Being a smaller diameter, it did cut through in a reasonable time, but it did get very hot as well. My biggest concern was that while the jig was able to keep the center of the saw on the door, if you don’t keep the drill straight and level, you will have issues with setting your hardware.Overall, while it is nice to have a jig that gives options on the hardware depth, this jig isn’t going to work for people who aren’t reasonably skilled with hand tools. The poor quality of the hole saw was disappointing, and my concern about the plastic becoming damaged during use is an issue. Therefore, I consider this an average jig and am giving it 3 stars.
