Solid Router Bit for Detailed Woodworking Projects

I really like the overall construction of this router bit. The triple flute design gives it a purpose built feel for woodworking applications where a clean and controlled cut matters.The 1/2 inch shank is useful for compatible routers and gives the bit a substantial, secure feel when properly installed. I also like the 5/8 inch diameter and 1 1/2 inch cutting depth because it provides a useful amount of cutting capability without being an unnecessarily oversized bit.For someone who does woodworking regularly, having specialized bits available for different projects is important, and this is a useful addition to a router bit collection.As with any cutting tool, the important thing is making sure the dimensions and shank size match the router being used and following the manufacturer's operating recommendations. For compatible setups, this is a nice, specialized piece of woodworking equipment.

The straight ¾” diameter ¼” shank router bit arrived in a nice plastic storage case. The latter is a must when you toss it in the drawer with all the other individual bits. I usually use the larger router with a ½” shank for cutting dados and rabbits on larger projects. But recently on a small project I wanted to use the small Dewalt router that was close at hand; however, I no longer have a ¾” diameter ¼” shank straight bit. My decision to use the slightly smaller plywood bit was a mistake since it led to more sanding to get the parts to fit. Thus, when presented with the opportunity to order this bit, I did not hesitate.Long term sharpness cannot be determined from a few test cuts, but the test performance was very acceptable. I cut some 6” long and 3/8” deep dados in black cherry scrap lumber. Cherry is a softer hardwood so I was not surprised when there were very fine burrs on the edges which disappeared in two passes of fine sand paper. Equally important, the bottom of the dado was flat and clean. So as long as this bit stays sharp, I will not hesitate to use it for my furniture dados.

Nibblax brand cuts cleanly - way better than the price indicates.

Having been satisfied with NIbblax router bits, from at least ten previous purchases of their brand, I thought I'd gamble on them again. The straight, three-flute router bit that I received, arrived with all three cutting edges intact. Closer inspection with an optical loupe, and microscope, verified the sharpness and grain direction integrity of the cutting edges. Once I put the bit into my table mounted router, and took a cut, I knew all was well - the bit cut clean internal corners, and did not leave steps in the sidewalls of my test cut samples.I have been happy with every single NIbblax brand bit that I have on my workbench. There are fancier brands, but for the life of me, I cannot figure out why I would pay several times as much, for a geometrically identical cutter of another brand. I have extensive experience with carbide cutting tools, acquired from spending over 25 years in a machine shop. Carbide is either sharp when you buy it, and it cuts cleanly, or it is chipped , and it cuts raggedly. Nibblax has been a consistent winner for me, and the 3/4" three-fluted router bit that I received is no exception to their winning streak. Nibblax removes material on the cheap.

Makes Clean Grooves

If you like handling little house projects yourself, this is a handy router bit to keep around. I used it the past week or so on a small shelf and a picture frame, and it made it a lot easier to cut a clean channel along the edge so the back pieces would sit down flat instead of leaving gaps and looking slapped together. The triple flute design cuts smooth, and the 1/2 inch shank gives it a steady feel in the router, which helped when I was taking out more material and did not want the bit bouncing around. What I liked most is that it moved through the work faster than the smaller straight bits I usually grab, so I was not stuck making one little pass after another just to get where I needed to be. My one gripe is that on an early pass I tried to lean into it a little too much, and the cut started looking rougher, so I backed off and let the bit work at a steadier pace. Once I did that, it cleaned right up and made a much nicer cut. Still, compared with similar bits I have used, this one feels like a better fit for real around-the-house projects where you want clean results without stretching a simple job into an all-day affair.

This router bit is a 3/4" diameter x 2-inch triple flute bit with a 1/2" diameter shank. The cutting edges are made of Tungsten Carbide and have a Teflon coating that will help smooth cutting finish, low vibration and will extend the tool life over time. For some reason my kit included a small hex wrench in the case.With three cutting edges that are very sharp along with the 1/2” diameter shank makes this router bit a very good chose for making smoother finish profiles. The three-flute design also will help with cleaner shallow cuts. This bit can be used in router tables, hand held routers and can also be used in CNC machines with multiple materials, like particle board, MDF, and both solid softer wood as well as hardwood. In general, it is recommended that you run 3/4-inch diameter router bits between 16,000 and 22,000 RPM. For clean and smooth cuts in softwood then you should run around 20,000 to 22,000 RPM. For hardwoods you will need to run around 16,000 to 18,000 RPM to prevent burning the wood.This is a nice sturdy router bit that I am planning to use in on upcoming project. So far so good, with several hundred feet X2 of red oak dados in the rear view.

Ordered this for a project that required several hundred feet (two hundred and forty to be exact) of 3/4" deep and 1" wide dados to be cut in red oak, and it performed flawlessly. I used it in my Festool OF 2200 (3 hp) plunge router mounted in a table set up. My feed stock was all four feet pieces that I ran almost continuously in batches of fifteen that sat ready nearby. I did allow the set up to cool for about ten minutes between each batch while I replaced the stack and set up the completed pieces at the next work station, but the work was pretty steady withing that context and all accomplished in less than two hours overall while making only two passes on each side of each dado.The 960 linear feet of red oak taken out at 3/8" at a time produced no significant tear out and took almost nothing to dress. It was still cutting clean when all was said and done, so no complaints about the quality of the carbide or sharpness right out of the box. The bit didn't overheat, and I wasn't especially gentle with my feed rate because it just kept cutting clean. I can't completely judge at this early a juncture, but it was every bit as productive as my Amana or Freud versions, if not a little smoother cutting and easier to push.Value for the money wise this is definitely less expensive than my CMT, Freud and Amana double flutes of this approximate size, so if it continues to hold up I will attest that it is a very good buy, but for now it's certainly worth what they're asking.

Bought Two, Glad We Did: A 7/8" Triple-Flute Bit Cutting T-Track Through Formica and EpoxyBought ...

Every four or five years the main assembly bench in our shop comes due for a resurface. It doubles as the outfeed for Bella, the 10-inch table saw that has been the centerpiece of this shop since the moon landing, so the top has to come back dead flat and true or Bella's work walks off the end of a bench that isn't. Two resurfaces back we started pouring epoxy under the laminate, because epoxy self-levels, and self-leveling is exactly the trait you want on a surface a table saw feeds onto. Here is what that leaves you cutting through. Roughly 1/16 inch of black commercial-grade Formica sitting on about 1/4 inch of well-cured epoxy. Do the math and that is 5/16 inch of genuinely hard material before your bit ever touches wood. Thermoset epoxy and phenolic laminate are not what a router bit sold for wood chip removal dreams about at night. ——— So why this bit, and why 7/8 inch. Because the bench doubles as an assembly table, we rig it with a grid of T-track so clamping a workpiece down is a simple matter of dropping a bolt in the channel. This resurface we pulled the old track and bought new 7/8 inch heavy-duty track for the grid. That is the whole reason for the 7/8 inch cutter: it matches the track width, so one pass cuts a channel the track drops straight into, instead of nibbling a channel to width in two passes and hoping the walls stay parallel. We knew we were asking a lot of one bit, so we ordered two. I am glad we did. The first bit made it a tad past halfway through the grid before we started seeing the signs [DAN: what were the signs - burning/scorching smell, fuzzy or chipped channel walls, slower feed?] that told us a fresh edge would be the smart move. We swapped to bit number two and finished the channels clean, rather than crawling to the end of the job on a tired edge and leaving ragged walls the track wouldn't seat in. This is a carbide-tipped bit, not solid carbide, which is the right build for a cutter at this diameter and price, and it is what took the beating cutting hard, abrasive material. The three flutes cleared chips well for what we were asking of them, and the channels came out clean and to width where the track dropped in and sat down right. ——— Sidebar - Let the Tool Do the Work: You constantly hear the pros say let the tool do the work, don't force it, and that is sound advice. I would add one more to it: be patient. The two go together. When you force a bit, you are shoving the feed rate up past what the cutter can clear, and in hard material like epoxy and laminate that shows up as heat. Heat is what takes the temper and the edge off carbide before its time. So the patience isn't just about a clean cut today, it is about how far the bit lives to cut. When you rush, that is exactly when the unfortunate things happen: a scorched wall, a grabbed bit, a flute chipped on a hard spot you drove into too fast. ——— Pro Tip - Buy Two When You're Working a Bit Past Its Job: This bit is sold for wood, and we pointed it at 5/16 inch of cured epoxy and phenolic laminate. When you knowingly ask a cutter to work past what it was built for, order a spare before you start, not after the first one gives out mid-job with the vehicle up on stands, so to speak. A fresh edge waiting in the drawer is the difference between finishing the grid clean and finishing it ragged because you didn't want to stop and wait on shipping. The spare is cheap insurance against a job you can't pause. ——— For a bit sold as a wood cutter, this one held up to a job well outside its lane: 5/16 inch of Formica over epoxy, cut to width for heavy-duty T-track, with the first bit carrying us past the halfway mark before a fresh edge took over. It did the work. It also confirmed that a spare was the right call, which is on us for the job we picked, not a knock on the bit.
