Key Features

  • Slow, Soft Closing for Most Lid: This soft close box hinge is a gas strut used for preventing heavy lids from slamming shut. It is capable of activating a controlled, slow-closing motion once the lid is pushed below 90°, making it an ideal safety box hinge for toy box or chest lids
  • Dual Mounting Brackets for Different Lid Types: The included two different mounting brackets allows this soft close box hinge to be used on flat lids (standard storage boxes), used on curved lids (decorative chests), and used on arched or rounded surfaces (toy boxes). Used by DIYers and furniture makers, having both options on hand means you can match the bracket to your specific lid shape without guesswork
  • 150N Per Hinge, Up to 50 lbs Total Capacity: This 2-pack slow close hinge kit is capable of managing lids weighing up to 50 lbs when both hinges are installed. Each individual gas strut hinge provides 150N of damping force, used to manage lids up to 25 lbs individually. With a 15-inch extended length, this soft close hinge is capable of reaching a 105° opening angle, used for wooden boxes that require wide access to the interior
  • Smooth, Quiet, and Built to Last: This soft close hinge closes lids with a steady, controlled motion and produces little noise during use. Used on toy chests or storage boxes, the quiet operation helps reduce the risk of sudden slams, while the durable alloy steel construction resists wear over time, ensuring the soft close hinge remains reliable over extended use
  • Complete 2-Pack Set for Easy Upgrade: Each package is a complete kit containing two gas struts, all necessary screws, and a manual. Used with basic DIY tools, it can be mounted on either the left or right side. This soft close hinge is an easy upgrade used for existing boxes, requiring no complex modifications

Worked great for a toy box lid

[Color: Black]
Used this on a custom made maple toy chest with a six pound lid. I only needed to use one but the close rate was just the ticket. Reasonable quality, easy install with removable lock feature.

Goodf struts that may be stronger than needed for your project.Goodf struts that may be stronger ...

Item Reviewed: Set of two 15-inch Soft CloseToy Box Lid Gas Struts (Allmake Brand)First off, I need to clarify that these struts are NOT hinges, any more than the struts that support the tailgate of your SUV are hinges. They are instead intended to slow the closing rate of lids so they do not slam shut. Hinges are separate items that allow radial movement while maintaining alignment. The struts appear to be of high quality with no jagged edges or protrusions to cut one’s fingers, or snag items placed into or taken out of a box. The brackets are stout enough for the job without looking industrial. Some reviews show silver-gray struts. I note the listing indicates a black finish; mine are indeed black. The attached photo shows all components included and the black struts at both minimum and maximum extensions. These dimensions may be important to you. At least two of the brackets allow adjustability if needed after initial installation. Installation difficulty will depend on both your skill and the specific needs of your task. I uploaded a scan of the instructions for reference. The Heim joints (the swivel pieces at the end of the struts) have an interesting design that I find better than the traditional design where a small bail holds the ball and the socket. This newer design makes fitting and securing the pieces much easier. These struts are a bit too strong for medium- and light-weight lids. I tried one on my 40-year-old rolling toolbox lid as I wanted to replace the old mechanical supports that are prone to slamming shut. The lid material is heavy gauge, unlike newer cheaply made tool boxes. Even though using only one strut I found the lid closing speed was best measured with a calendar than a clock. This isn’t much of a problem as I can easily add some ballast to the lid to make it close faster. Just keep this in mind when purchasing. In summary, this set is a good value and well worth your consideration. I've rated the set four stars, but would have rated it five stars were the strut strength more appropriate to toy boxes.

Strong gas struts that prevent slamming on heavy lids

[Color: Black]
Installing these 15-inch 150N gas struts on a heavy wooden chest makes opening and closing completely safe and smooth. The heavy-duty metal construction ensures top-tier build quality, providing a reliable fit that prevents lids from slamming shut on hands. The ease of use during installation is high thanks to clear mounting points, and the slow-close mechanism operates quietly without any sticking. The 2-pack size gives you full coverage for larger lids, promising awesome structural longevity and offering fantastic value for money for home safety hardware.

I AM GOING TO BE MAKING A HOPE CHEST THAT WILL THESE STRUTS FOR A LID STAY

[Color: Silver]
I like these struts, easy to install, sturdy, and appears to be able to handle many, many openings and closings. I have been testing these with a door on my tools cabinet and am impressed with the results of the constant use. Soft close still works, pressure constant, no binding, no wearing of the ends. Overall, a great item for the builder who wants a durable, consistent gas lift for very little money. As I said before I am testing these lifts on a door in the shop to get an idea of the sturdiness, and the consistency of the soft closure and after several hundred open close cycles, no degradation of the parts are observed. Overall, a very easy and very inexpensive way to raise and lower a chest door.

Nicer to use than to look at

[Color: Silver]
These struts provide safety and functionality to the vintage wooden trunk I’ve been restoring. The lid is quite heavy, and aside from the injury risk to fingers, it would cause a loud bang when slammed shut. I am very happy to have eliminated those issues thanks to this modern hinge set that provides sturdy holding and a soft close to the lid. I only wish the materials were more visually attractive. The gray plastic is very dull and classes with the metal. The metal doesn’t have the normal chrome coating seen on most alloy parts; it is a conspicuously sparkly—almost glitter—silver coating. But I fear that any attempt to mask the aesthetics with spray paint could interfere with the mechanism, so I suppose I will learn to live with it. Considering the product is affordable and easy enough to install, I’m willing to overlook the appearance shortcomings.

Easy to Install and Looks Great

[Color: Black]
I installed one of these on a wooden chest, and I'm happy with how it turned out. Installation was much easier than I expected thanks to the straightforward instructions and included hardware. The strut itself has a clean, low-profile appearance that doesn't distract from the look of the chest, and the black finish blends in nicely.I also like that these seem versatile enough to work on a variety of boxes and chests, depending on the lid weight. For my particular application, I do wish the soft-close action was a little stronger. My lid is fairly light, so it takes around 30 seconds to fully close on its own. That said, I recognize these struts were likely designed with heavier lids in mind, where the closing speed would probably be just about right.Overall, this is a well-made product that was easy to install and performs as advertised. If your project involves a heavier lid, I think these would be an especially good choice.

Good, but could be better

[Color: Black]
Overall good, however one of the metal brackets bent a little. They need to be stronger.

Great quality slow close gas strut.Great quality slow close gas strut.

[Color: Black, Color: Black]
Great quality slow close gas strut. Initially there was a spring loaded hinge on this chest, but that broke many years ago and since then it has just slammed shut. At first I thought these were too strong for my application but they turned out to be perfect. I initially misread the instructions and placed them wrong as the lid would not fully close. Once I figured out the correct placement these worked amazingly well. They are very nicely made and even have a locking mechanism which I have not used. I would be very comfortable using them on a child's toy chest. They come complete with two mounting methods.
