I had a closet door in my upstairs with a original 1920s mortise lock that was having issues, in addition to having been painted over a few dozen times as well, so decided to replace it with new and use the original hardware elsewhere in the house.While being modern stamped steel construction, this mortise set is higher quality than you would expect for the price, with a nice finish and polished brass bolts on the lock.It also turned out retrofitting this in place of a 100 year old original mortise lock wasn't too bad, I just needed to slightly elongate the door recess, and do a little chisel work on the door jamb to accept the bigger strike plate, but I had it in and working in under 30 minutes. The plates are slightly narrower than the originals, but I need to repaint this door anyway so no big deal. Now my closet door stays latched and I can lock it too, which is a bonus.Overall, for the price, this is a good looking and functional replacement for vintage mortise lock setups.

I've installed a few of these and they're all about the same mechanism and design. The only real difference in these is the style of the handle and the paint. Installation is fairly straight forward but will likely require a set of chisels if it's not exactly the size. I thought I saw somewhere in the listing that this is meant for a specific type of swing but the included instructions show you how to reverse the swing if needed. Just be prepared to catch the springs if/when they escape. The handles themselves are the hollow kind and if you don't have a door stopper you might end up with an imploded handle quickly as is does seem to be on the thinner side. Once it's actually installed it seems sturdy though. The keys are quite different from my other locks but I actually prefer that. Even though two of my other locks are different types they can both open each other because they're so similar but this one is can't be opened by those luckily so I might swap this one out for the bathroom handle. This biggest selling point for this one is the price coming in around $22.

I just moved from an old house that has all of the doors with keyholes, keys, and one skeleton key so I was missing have that aesthetic.The door knob itself is smooth and easy to turn. The lock fits cleanly in the strike plate and I didn’t need to chisel a grove for the strike plate. If you’re putting this in a new door that didn’t already have door knob holes or a center line groove on the door edge then you’ll have more drilling and chiseling to do. If you’re like me and installing this on an already existing door, you’ll can use the door holes you already have and wrap the template around so the holes match up. Then just chisel a little further down the center edge of the door (where the lock comes out of the door) and drill/chisel out the keyhole. It’s not a difficult process and the instructions are easy to follow.The keys work perfectly in the lock and this doorknob gives the place an antique feel. Especially cool if you’re using this for a walk up attic door.Overall this is a great value for an awesome lock and I’m gonna have to buy a few more for the house.
