These taps seem sturdy and made well. They come with a cleaning brush and a hook to hang a bucket on. They did *not* come with directions. I had to look at the listing again to see exactly how to use them. So, maybe not as a gift or for beginners. I will have to update my review when I can use them on a tree (now is not the correct time of year).

I know people who make their own syrup. It's a great way to get fantastic quality syrup but it takes a lot of time. I'm gathering stuff for the end of civilization when I have more time on my hands. Thought great syrup would be make things a little better. The quality of the spouts and hooks are very good. Heavier weight than I was expecting.

We have a few maple trees on our property, but we have never actually tapped them before, and I would love to finally start making our own maple syrup as a family. This set came with the spiles along with the hooks to hang buckets, so hopefully by next year we will have our own maple sap ready to boil down into real homemade syrup.The quality seems great, with sturdy stainless steel construction that feels like it will hold up season after season without rusting or wearing down. Since this is our first time tapping trees, we do not have much past experience to really compare it to, but everything about the kit feels well made and straightforward enough for beginners like us to figure out.For the price, this feels like a great starter set for anyone wanting to try their hand at tapping their own trees for the first time.

This is an unboxing...I need to find a maple tree, so I'm just reviewing the physical product right out of the box for now.​Right away, you can tell the quality is really nice. It is very nicely made and definitely seems sturdy. The kit comes with four stainless steel spiles that include sturdy hooks, plus a dedicated cleaning brush to help maintain everything. It is built for tapping one to four maple trees and is designed for an easy five minute installation where you just drill a standard hole at a slight upward angle and gently insert the spile. It also features a universal fit that works with standard collection tubing, traditional sap buckets, or sap bags...​I'll try to update the review after I actually get a chance to use it out in the trees.

We live on a semi-wooded lot in Upstate New York that has a fair number of mature silver maple and black walnut trees.I've always thought it would be cool to make my own syrup and finally decided to give it a try when I saw these spile's pop up in my Amazon feed. This syrup tapping kit includes 4 spiles with bucket hooks and a cleaning brush.As I understand it, tapping trees is pretty easy to do, but it's a springtime project. You drill a 5/16" hole in the tree at a slight upward angle, about an inch and a half deep, thread the hook onto the spile and tap the tapered end into the hole. You can hang a bucket right from the spile hook, or in my case I'll run a tube to a larger covered bucket on the ground.These taps feel well made. They're stainless steel so they'll be easy to clean and shouldn't corrode. These are about $3 each, which isn't unreasonable for a set of only four.Overall, these seem to be just what I was looking for. I'm glad I ordered them.

I mean, these are basic because that’s all you need in a spile.While I won’t be able to try these out until next early spring, my initial impressions are good. I’ve been looking to replace some of my old and beaten to death spiles and these will make a suitable replacement.They arrived well packaged and even included a brush to clean out the spiles more easily after use.The bucket hooks are neither too short nor too long, and they should work well with the spiles and my sap collection containers without any need for modification.If you have a tree that’s safe to tap and you’re homemade maple or birch syrup curious this is a good entry level set that can get you started.I just wish the packaging listed the spile diameter, as you need to drill the tree before tapping the spile into position and that would go a little faster if one didn’t have to dig for the correct drill bit.

We tap our Maple trees around February, which is seven months away. It's not possible to give a performance review until then but since I'm experienced and have been tapping Maple trees for seventeen years, I can give my impressions of these spiles. This is just a small pack of four, which is good if you are already tapping and just in need of more spiles. If you aren't already set up to tap then look for a complete tapping kit with hose and buckets, and more than four spiles. These spiles are quite nice. The outside diameter is standard size and the inside diameter is slightly larger than plastic spiles. These are made for the bucket method. It will hold bags that use a plastic pipe hanger by placing the pipe on the hook and running the sap hose through the pipe and into the bag. These don't come with any instructions, so I would advise that a wood block be used against the end of these spiles while tapping them into the tree so that the metal doesn't get damaged by tapping. Overall, these are a nice quality and look like they will hold up well.
