This socket is a tool that is designed to drive eyebolts and three-quarter inch square nuts. It is called a lineman’s tool because the power poles they work on use a lot of bolts with three-quarter inch square heads. I am not a lineman and I don’t screw in a lot of eye bolts, but now when I do I will be happy to have this helper. When you’re screwing half inch lag bolt type eye bolts into a power pole like on my pole barn it takes a lot of muscle. I can use this on my 1/2 inch impact driver to get the necessary torque. It comes with an adapter to drive it with a quarter inch impact, but that might not be a strong as you want for bigger bolts. The quality appears good, I will see with use how it holds up.

I'm pleased with this socket. It does what it claims, and for what seems to me to be a good price.What comes in the (tiny) box (Pic 1) is just the socket and hex-to-1/2" adapter (Pic 2). The parts you get are definitely strong and have the usual matte finish of impact tools. There are very faint markings on the socket (unlike the clear markings in the official product images), but then this is a one-off tool, and it's not as if you're going to be looking in your tool box for the exact one out of a dozen other similar sockets.In my case, my immediate need was to drive large screw eyes, particularly into areas where it would be hard to drive them by hand using a bar. One such screw eye is shown in Pic 3 (), which claims to be rated for 800lbs. This screw eye fits into the 0.57" (Pic 4) slot in the socket with a fair bit of room to spare.If you look down into the socket, you can see that it has a 3/4" square profile inside (Pic 5). I'm not sure what this might be useful for in practice, but if there are 3/4" square things out there that need to be driven, then this would presumably work, though it won't be as strong as a dedicated 3/4" tool would be, since it has the slot cut into it. If one measures the diagonal of this opening (Pic 6), it comes out at 1.06", so it might be possible to cram in some other strange shapes of fastener into the socket above and beyond what would naturally fit into the slot.The attached movie shows the use of this socket. I tested things by drilling a full-depth pilot hole into some scrap lumber, and then drove in the screw eye discussed above. I used a compact 1/2" impact wrench to do this. Operationally, the socket worked just fine. It was a little hard to get the screw eye started, since the socket doesn't grip the screw eye very securely, but once it was driving true into the pilot hole things worked out just fine. In a separate test, I also tried using an impact driver, which allowed me to test the hex-to-1/2" adapter as well (sorry, but the video didn't come out OK for that). I found that the impact driver did indeed work, but the higher impact rate made it much harder to control the driving of the screw eye, and it often slipped out of the socket. The somewhat lower torque on the impact driver also made for harder going as the screw eye got deeper into the pilot hole. At least for the screw eye I was using, and for the pilot hole diameter I selected, a competent, compact impact wrench was OK, but marginal. A full-sized/high-torque impact wrench would clearly have made things easier, but I wanted to test to see if a more portable one would work, too.The bottom line is that I like the socket and think it'll work well for me. I wouldn't want to use it for much smaller eye fasteners, since I think that they wouldn't seat so well in the socket. This is not a good tool for driving in (say) cup hooks. For me, the hex-to-1/2" adapter is of no value, since I have multiple 1/2" impact wrenches, which I think would be better for the job. Still, if you only have an impact driver then it'll probably work out well enough for you.For me, the price seems completely reasonable for a low-volume weirdo tool like this. I expect to use it in places where there simply isn't going to be enough room to drive in large screw eyes by any means that takes up more room than the head of an impact wrench, so for me this is a game-changer. If you're not as cramped for space as I am, then the price might feel a little steep, but time is money, and this tool is certainly much quicker than doing it by hand with a bar.

At the current price of around $16 for a single socket and a 1/2 inch to 1/4 inch hex driver that is a little expensive to me. It is a sturdy 19mm socket that unlike most drivers of this type appears to be purpose made with a chevron shaped cutout at the bottom of the 9/16 inch slot to help keep round eye bolts and J hooks in place. The others I have simply have a cut ground into a regular socket which doesn't handle round stock as well as this socket. It appears to be a black phosphate type finish, however, the description lists it as being black zinc plating which is usually shinier and more glossy than this. I have several V shaped hex driver versions of this type tool but they don't work very well because it is easy to have a thin hook slip out of the V shape. This holds larger hooks solidly and allows you to drive them without any problem. You can use the included 1/2 inch to hex adapter with a drill or impact driver or you can use a 1/2" impact driver. It's a nice handy tool that should last a long time and it is especially useful if you do a lot of work with eye bolts or hooks that on the larger sizes. The slot is 9/16" so a 1/2" steel hook will easily fit.

Beautifully made tool!This is very rugged and heavy duty. If you have to drive eye screws or bolts, especially over your head, this is a life saver. Even for just a few.The tool is heavily coated with a durable black oxide finish. The stem fits and locks into the socket snuggly and this is definitely made from a high grade steel. I am very happy to add this to my tool box and I expect it to last longer than I will!I also consider this to be a good value, you are not going to find one of these in a retail store for anywhere near this good a price!
