I used this 4x4 post base to repair an aging mailbox post that had finally seen better days after being hit by a school bus while it was turning around on our street. Rather than trying to salvage the old post or completely redo the entire setup, this gave me a solid foundation for installing the replacement.The 16-inch length provides good support, and the internal dimensions worked well with the 4x4 post. Once everything was installed, the mailbox felt sturdy and secure again.The construction feels heavy duty and much more substantial than the old setup it replaced. It was also a relatively simple and inexpensive way to get the mailbox back in shape without turning it into a much larger project.Overall, this worked perfectly for my application. My mailbox is standing straight and secure again, and hopefully it won't have to survive another encounter with a school bus anytime soon.

This anchor worked well for installing a wooden post without having to pour concrete. The pointed ground spike is substantial, and the powder-coated metal feels much stronger than some of the thinner post brackets I’ve handled.Getting it started was fairly easy, but keeping everything perfectly straight while driving it down took a little patience. I would consider this more appropriate for a mailbox, birdhouse, hose reel, decorative fence, or another smaller outdoor structure than something carrying a major structural load. For that type of project, it is a useful time saver.

I tested this based on normal conditions- soil that had been in place for some time. I found that for bare soil where the soil compaction was not extreme meant the post stake wouldn't hold without swaying. It markets itself as a fence post base, but I don't recommend it for a fence unless you'll be using concrete in the ground. There's just too much sway.The product itself is well made and easy to tamp into the ground. After working with it, I didn't notice any chipping of the finish. The top box where the post fits is around 3.5" or so so it works well for larger posts. I suggest measuring your post, even if you use non-wood posts.I've used other post bases and this one was identical at the top, so much so that comparing it with others meant you couldn't tell until you looked at the differentiator- the spikes. This one has plain spikes but a hole in the stake, which might help if you plan to put it in concrete.Installation was easy, in my case, I simply moved the 4x4 post up and down until the post base was level with the ground. However, the post base moved back and forth in the soil, proving the hypothesis that the soil compaction is important. The post base fit well for larger posts, but if you have some posts that are a bit smaller, you may need some shims to ensure it stays level and fits into the base.If you have clay or another tight soil, you may be able to use this without concrete or digging. If I were to place it in concrete, I can envision using rebar horizontally into the post base.If you have a very short and very light fence and tight concrete, this may work. The product is comparable to other post bases of similar size. In quantity, these are a good value, buying one is comparable expensive.

The only shortfall of this product, in my opinion, is the gauge thickness of the metal. The image below shows two nickels alongside the above-ground post holder frame. The intent is to help you visualize the thickness, which appears essentially the same as a nickel. It appears the entire product is constructed of the same thickness metal. Where a concrete (and virtually permanent) installation is undertaken, I would worry that the concrete foundation would outlive the integrity of the metal. Meaning the metal holder may become the weakest link over a long period of time. This may not be true, but it's something worth considering.Otherwise, this is a nicely constructed postholder. It has a clean powder finish with exacting dimensions. The accompanying screw hardware is satisfactory, but pan-style screw heads may be a better choice.Finally, I very much appreciate the enclosed instructions and contact information. This seems a rare addition accompanying products these days, and I like it so much that I included a picture.A reasonable value for an appropriate application.

I am very pleased with this fence post base. I used it to add a 2x4 support in my newly constructed deer fence. The metal is heavy duty and the black powder coating gives it a durable finish that should hold up well outdoors. The 16 inch length provides plenty of support in the ground and the 4x4 opening fit my 2x4 just fine. I screwed through the base into the 2x4 to anchor it well. The 2x4 is supported above by 2 horizontal members of the fence.Installation was straightforward and the stake feels very solid once installed. It is a good choice for fence posts decks porches railings or even a mailbox. For the price this is a well made product that does exactly what I needed.I would definitely recommend this fence post base to anyone looking for a strong and durable way to support a 2x4, 4x4 or other appropriate post.

Really nice, stout metal post holder and extra long stake which is necessary for our ground here. This fits a 4x4 treated timber perfectly without having to force it in but snug enough to hold securely even without the screws in place. Always secure with the included screws or your own. This is a good gauge of metal, although I didn't use my caliper to check, it's clearly thick enough to do the job and will last for longer than you will likely be around to need it. Our use will be a mailbox post as we need to replace the weak metal U post. Perfect for many situations and this makes it very easy and quick to install a post. While the price for one might seem high, it's well worth it, and you can save a lot by buying more than one, keep them on hand for future uses. Highly recommend this.

Came exactly as described. Including matching black screws to secure the 4 x 4 post to it and clear easy instructions. I like working with these. It helps to prevent premature rotting of the wood as there is no ground contact and it affords some air circulation around the post within the bracket. Along with ample drainage holes at the bottom.I can set this into concrete or directly into the ground. Either method works. These work great for temporary fencing too. For instance, if you would like to put in a temporary picket fence for a sales event that you can move to another location afterward you can hammer this into the ground using a sacrificial 8" long 4 x 4 and a hammer/sledge. Once in you screw your actual post in place to attach your picket fence panel to. This makes for a very secure fence. When finished you can detach the picket and the post from the base. Then pry the base up from its spot.We are going with a permanently fixed application for a wood deck. So, we are going to use this as one of the bases set in concrete for the 4 x 4 posts.The selling points for me are that there is no ground contact for the wood and that there are holes in the bottom of the base allow for moisture to drain away from the post. There are termites everywhere in our neck of the woods. Utilizing a base like this is a prudent decision.

This 16" 4x4 fence post base is a good value for the money in my opinion for just $26. It is very solid and stout made from thickened carbon steel with a nice, black rust resistant finish. It is versatile and can be driven into soil or if pouring concrete, you can stick a piece of rebar through it for a sturdier and stronger long-term hold. It measures approximately 16" in overall height from top to bottom. It is made to accept a 4x4" (measure 3.5" x 3.5") post perfectly with 1/10" of room to spare because the post base size is 3.6" x 3.6" square. I found it was easier to drive in the ground without the post inserted, and I used a small scrap piece of 4x4 post to insert into the base to sledgehammer it into the ground. That worked well for me so just FYI. It has a strong hold, and I feel like it will last a long time. I used it on deck step to install a railing for use on the stairs. This is a quality-made, durable, and functional post base for a great price, and I HIGHLY recommend it to anyone!
