Thin Wrench Set

There are very few circumstances where these are handy, but when you need them and don't have them, you'll wish you did! Just one example for me is removing a nut on a power steering pump while holding the stud in place on the pump. The only way to do this is with a wrench thin enough to not catch the nut but hold the stud. They are finished in chrome and look good, should resist rust for a while, and the included tool roll makes it easy to store or hang on pegboard.The set is pretty complete, but it does have a serious miss. There is NO 5/8" wrench in this set. That happened to be the size I needed, and I made do with the 11/16, but come on, 5/8 is such a common size, it's incredible that it is not included. I'd rather have the 5/8 than say the 13/32. From that perspective, the versatility is limited, but it's otherwise a fairly complete set all the way up to 1 1/16This would be a perfect set if it had that one common size included. Otherwise, it's handy to have in the shop and the price isn't bad.

Ordered this kit to supplement my specialty tool collection needed and used when working on most anything mechanical but mostly for motorcycle and automobile engines. The kit is fairly universal and includes wrench sizes 1/4" through 1 1/16". Including one with a 13/32" opening. Don't think I've ever run across a 13/32" bolt or nut head. Each piece of the kit is made from hardened carbon steel with a full polish finish. When used lightly, they will each perform as expected. Though the description says hardened steel, a thin wrench can only take so much before deforming. I've already experience a slight deformation in the 1/2 wrench. Try to only use these to hold the nut or bolt in place and loosen the other side of the fastener. They do look good and will only take up a small space in your tool box. These are better than stamped steel thin wrenches but not tool truck quality. More expensive tools are available but for the average Joe that will only need this tool on occasion, these tools will perform well and get the job done. Again, do not use these wrenches in place of your normal open end set. Price is in line with the mid level quality.I select products on Amazon Vine to review that I will keep and use. Many get favorable reviews. A few items have fallen short of my expectations. I do my best to review all products honestly, without bias. All opinions are my own.

I grabbed these because I have run into a ton of jobs where a normal wrench just wouldn't fit. Honestly, they feel like regular wrenches just cut in half, which is exactly what I was looking for. They seem to fit the nuts and bolts they are supposed to fit, and being so thin means they should fit into cramped spaces really well. You won't need them for every job, but when you are stuck in a tight spot, there is just no substitute for a set like this. They feel sturdy enough for what they are built for, and the pouch is a nice way to keep them separated and not lost in my wrench drawer.

These are heavier and more robust than stamped wrenches, which I consider disposable as well as hard to use. I’m not a mechanic. I assemble equipment and furniture and parts and pieces of random stuff from time to time, and I’ve had situations where only a skinny wrench would do the job right, but I had to resort to awkwardly using needle nosed pliers or some other ridiculous workaround to tighten what I needed to. These are going to be indispensable for me, and I’ll share them with the husband. The vast majority of our tools are his, and so live up in the barn in his domain. These are going to live in the house so they’re easily and quickly accessible by me. The one omission I thought was a label on the outside of the bag, so I made my own by writing directly on the bag with silver permanent marker: SAE SKINNY WRENCHES. They look great, they work fine, they’ve fit what I wanted them to so far, and I’m thrilled with the set. I just need to get the metric set now and I’ll be well equipped. For what I use wrenches for, skinny is usually sturdy enough— I’m not usually breaking free rusty tractor bolts or anything. I’m happy, and I think they’re a good deal.

Really good looking set of wrenches, if your toolbox is in need of a thin set, this is a pretty good one overall. Both sides being open and helps for storing in a smaller space. And there’s a lot of value to be found in wrenches, especially when they have a specific use. As for durability, I’ve been trying to bend them, and I haven’t really been able to get them to give. With them being 3 mm I’m sure if you crank it hard enough on heavier job jobs you could probably get them to do it. But it’s a thin set. I’m not sure why you would do that. Just use a standard wrench, but they do seem strong and durable.Overall, a really nice set of wrenches and I’m happy to have in the toolbox.

This is a good wrench set. I don’t need thin wrenches very often, but when you do need one, there really isn’t a good substitute. These are about 3mm thick, so they can get into narrow spaces where a normal wrench would be too bulky.The set has 16 wrench sizes total, with two sizes on each wrench. The construction seems good to me. They are thin, but they still feel like real tools rather than flimsy stamped metal. They are also a normal usable length, which helps.It also comes with a bolt-size gauge. I’m not sure how often I’ll use that, but it’s a useful extra to have in the kit. I especially like the roll-up storage pouch. I prefer this over molded plastic cases because it takes up less room, is easier to carry around, and seems less likely to crack or become annoying over time.Overall, this is a solid low-profile wrench kit. It’s not something I’ll use every day, but it fills a real gap in the toolbox and should be very handy when a regular wrench just won’t fit.

I already had sets of thin wrenches in both SAE and metric sizes, but had been looking for another set in SAE because I'm sick of plundering my automotive tools to find a slim wrench to change blades on table saws or attachments on angle grinders. This set seems to be just what I needed.What arrives in a simple cardboard box is a tool roll/carry case (Pic 1) with the eight open-ended wrenches, and a size gauge. Each wrench is double ended with different sizes on each end, of course. The wrenches are clearly stamped with the wrench sizes on both sides, which is nice, though a contrasting colour would have been nice.Although carry cases for tools like this are not particularly important to me, I'll be the first to admit that the carry case for this set is much nicer than the ones I have with my other slim wrench sets. Of note is the flap at the top which stops the wrenches from falling out, a couple of loops from which you could hang the set on a wall, and the Velcro fastener (as opposed to a fabric tie). All of these are an improvement over what I've had so far.I've never felt a particular need for a size gauge like the one provided, but perhaps I'll find it useful. It's graduated in both metric and Imperial units, though the markings are hard to read, since they're just molded into the yellow plastic from which it's made (Pic 2).I measured up the internal sizes of the wrenches, an example of which is shown in Pic 3 for the 3/4" wrench. It measured out at 0.756" (Pic 3), which seems reasonable. It's always nice to have wrenches be tight but, at least in my experience, thin wrenches are not usually subject to high loading which might make damage to either the wrench or the fastener more likely if the fit is not tight enough. When I'm using a thin wrench, I'm usually just in search of anything that'll fit into the narrow space.All of the wrenches in this set are of the same thickness, namely 2.91mm (Pic 4), which is very close to what they claim. It's nice to find product claims which are actually accurate. These are indeed laudably slim. The wrenches in my old sets (let's call them "Brand X") are 3.76mm thick, so 29% thicker (Pic 5).Continuing with the comparison, the opening of the 1" wrench from this set measured 1.05" (Pic 6), and the Brand X one measured 1.05" (Pic 7), so negligibly different. Their weights were very different. This set's 1" wrench weighs 116g, and the Brand X wrench is 182g (Pic 9), i.e. 56% heavier. Some of this difference in weight will be due to the difference in thickness, and some due to the shorter length, 8.75" (Pic 10) vs. 9.25" for Brand X (Pic 11). I'm not in a position to comment on the quality of the steel.All told, I'm pleased with these wrenches. These seem well made and pretty sturdy, but they're clearly less substantial than my old ones. I'm not sure that any of the observed differences will ever be material to me in practice. I doubt that I'll ever need the extra strength of my old set to loosen any table saw blade, but equally I doubt that I'll ever need to save that extra 0.85mm in order to get a nut undone, but if I really need that I'll be able to plunder the thinner wrench to get the job done, and I"ll still be a happy camper. Good value.

There's a specific frustration with working in tight engine bays or appliances where a standard wrench almost fits but not quite. I've bought cheap wrenches and taken them to the bench grinder to solve this problem, but having a wrench designed to be thin is a far more elegant solution (and in that case, not that much more expensive).I measured these at 2.8mm rather than the advertised 3mm. On most products that would be a quality control note; on a thin wrench set, it's a quiet bonus. The chrome finish is excellent, noticeably better than I expected at this price. The wrenches feel solid in hand, nothing flexy or cheap about them, and the range of SAE sizes covers what I actually reach for.The rollup case is basic. It does the job of keeping the set organized and portable, and I don't need it to be anything more than that. It's labeled, which matters more than it sounds when you're putting wrenches back after a job.At $23 for eight wrenches with a case and a gauge, this is a solid value. Solid enough that I've already got the metric set in my cart. That's probably the most honest endorsement I can give: a tool set that makes you want the matching version before you've even finished putting it away.
