I use these to make extension cords for a welder and a plasma cutter that require 240VAC. I use copper SOOW wire 8AWG to get the ampacity that matches the plug and receptacle. You can configure the plug for NEMA 6-50P or 6-30P by changing the conductor pin (supplied).

I assembled this high-quality NEMA 6-50 plug-and-connector set at my apartment workbench for a purpose-built 240-volt cord connection. I chose a matched 6-50 set because the equipment required two hot conductors and an equipment ground, not a neutral, and I did not want to build around an improvised adapter, and it was a great deal. I checked the cable type, conductor size, jacket diameter, terminal markings, and strain-relief range before terminating anything. The large connector bodies are only useful when every part of the cable assembly matches them.Once I opened the connector bodies, the terminal layout and cord-grip range were straightforward to inspect. I dry-fitted the cable before stripping anything so the jacket, clamp, and conductor reach all lined up without forcing the parts together. The outer jacket needs to be captured by the cord grip so movement is not transferred to the terminals. Conductors should be stripped to the proper length, fully seated, and tightened according to the manufacturer's instructions. Loose high-current connections generate heat, and visual guesswork is not an acceptable substitute for correct termination.Contact fit is another important part of a high-current connector. The blades should enter the matching receptacle firmly, remain fully seated, and come out by pulling the plug body rather than the cord. A loose or partially inserted connection can heat even when the wire size is correct. After the initial loaded use on the correct circuit, I checked both connector bodies for odor, discoloration, softened plastic, or unexpected temperature. Any of those signs call for immediate inspection, not a tighter grip on a questionable receptacle. I can confirm that this is a durable and long-lasting plug and connector set.I planned the cable route around the connector's physical size. Heavy cable should approach without a tight bend that tries to lever the plug out of the outlet, and the cord grip must match the jacket diameter. If this set is used for portable equipment, repeated movement makes strain relief and terminal inspection more important over time. The plug and connector solve the detachable interface, but they do not make a cable assembly weatherproof or suitable for abuse unless the complete assembly is listed for those conditions.This set also should not be used to change what the connected equipment requires. There is no neutral available in a 6-50 configuration, so equipment that uses 120-volt internal loads or specifically calls for a four-wire supply needs the proper connection. Circuit protection, wiring method, receptacle, and equipment rating all have to agree with one another.

The enclosure screws were so challenging to work with that I nearly rated it three stars. The heads of the screws are so small that threading them in and out proves to be quite difficult. Additionally, one of the screws goes right through the center of the prongs, which is unfortunate because it would have been a great spot to run the ground wire through the middle of the plug. Aside from that issue, the overall quality of the housing and the prongs appears to be decent. However, I wasn't a fan of how the ground plug wire attaches. Unlike the power and neutral wires, which have a practical set screw to securely hold them, the ground wire uses a screw on a flat plate that pinches it down. This design forces you to split the heavy wire in order to keep it secure (note that all three connections in the female plug-in are this way). Moreover, the ground wire has to be routed around the exterior of the other plugs, and there's just barely enough space for that. The plastic seems sturdy enough, and the finger grips on the back should help with plugging it in and out of sockets with ease. This is a well-designed plug overall, except for the small heads on the retaining screws. If I were to make another purchase, I might look into a different brand simply because of the screws.

I have a 10.4 kw space heater I made from the heating elements from a couple dryers. I had a different plug on the end of the cord and its terminal screw mounts are noticeably heavier than this one. I didn't like the old plug because its difficult to grip it to unplug it without my fingers slipping around near the terminals. So its unsafe to unplug, which is why I ordered this one. But the terminals on this one look a bit weak. Both the old plug and this one are 50a rated, but clearly there is a different quality of termins. So I'm not sure how this will go next winter when I fire up the space heater...The case feels a bit flimsy too, but some of these plugs are flimsy until the halves are screwed together. So that doesn't concern, it seems pretty solid once fully assembled.I'm just a bit nervous about heat buildup on those terminals.

A set of 50 amp plugs (male and female or plug and receptacle) can be used as a connection for two cables, an end or a 50 amp extension cable for welding and other 50 amp electrical devices. This unit can also be configured for 30 amp connections using #10 copper wire. 50 amp requires #6 wire and these plugs are designed to accept #6 wire to carry a full 50 amps. These two plugs are designed to power welders, garage applications, Electric Vehicles and more as a plug on the power cord or as plugs for a full size full powered 50 amp or 30 amp extension cord on a 220-250 volt systems. Heavy duty for durability, the plugs have a heavy hand grip for easy plug in or unplugging. This makes these plugs much easier to use since these connections require strong contact between individual connectors. These plugs are difficult to plug in and even more difficult to unplug with nothing to hold as you try to pull the plug out. These plugs are designed for convenience and ease of use. #6 and #10 wire easily fits the lugs provided. These heavy duty plugs are a good value for heavy use in high amperage circuits. A rubber insert allows use of #6 wire and the smaller #10 wire. The plug comes set up for 50 amp service using #6 copper wire. The extra blade converts to 30 amp #10 wire. The very back screws are used to secure the wire to the plug.
