Solid workhorse flashlight

This flashlight delivers what it promises. The aluminum construction feels durable and it's noticeably heavy, which instills confidence it'll survive drops and rough handling. The 430-lumen output is bright with a useful beam pattern. The 4 lighting modes are easy to swap through and runtime with D batteries is solid.Minor note: At this price you're paying for build quality over flashiness. There's nothing revolutionary here, but it's exactly what you'd want in a reliable emergency light or camping flashlight. The weight that gives it that "well-made" feel is also why you won't want to pocket it daily. Stick it in a place you'll remember to pull it out when it's needed.For the value, it's it if you need dependable brightness without complications.

Would be better with rechargeable batteries

Ok so if you carried a mag light from back in the day then this will bring back memories. But as far as brightness then this light will not be the best. It is not very heavy but I was surprised that the batteries were not rechargeable. I have a lot of flashlights that are much brighter with rechargeable batteries. This would not be my go to flashlight since you have to use D batteries at least not in 2026.

While it's not a well-known brand of flashlight, it's a solidly built compact (for a D-cell) light that has a pretty impressive output. I mean it's not an uber-bright 1100 lumen tactical light designed to incapacitate bad guys and start forest fires the moment it turns on, but for a practical looking-around-in-the-dark light it fits the bill nicely. Given that it takes 2 D-cell carbon or alkaline batteries, there will be limitations in voltage and current delivery compared to the brighter lithium powered lights, but at this level of still-useful output those 2 D-cells should last awhile.There are four modes supported by cycling the tail cap switch: bright flood, dimmer flood, spotlight, and strobe. By the way, the written blurb in the Amazon text description mentions a side switch (incorrect, it's a tail switch), and 300 lumen flood while the images show 430 lumen bright flood. I can't tell the different between 300 and 430 lumen by just looking at it, but I'll say it's blinding to me regardless. I expect the relatively modest 400 lumen output (at the brightest) combined with the energy density of 2 D-cell batteries will provide for a considerably long battery life compared to the higher lumen single-cell pocket/tactical lights.Construction is typical flashlight aircraft aluminum. Fitting of tailcap to change batteries is solid with a seal against moisture or dust. Knurling is aggressive but not uncomfortably sharp. Overall I like it a lot for a general purpose household flashlight that's easy to grab and use without being awkwardly small, or long and bulky like a 4D Maglite would be.

The light is provided by two different LED elements under a glass lens. The flashlight is sealed with an “O”-ring at the rear tail cap; however, no IP rating is mentioned on the product’s Amazon page. The tail cap also contains the switch which operates the flashlight. The switch is covered by an orange silicone cover to prevent moisture from getting to the switch and causing damage. The barrel of the flashlight is covered with very well executed cross-hatch style knurling for a good purchase of the flashlight even if your hands are wet or dirty.The LEDs for this flashlight are naturally located at the front of the flashlight under a glass lens. They are arranged in a set of six (6) LEDs in a ring around the outside of the lens and a single, larger, centrally located LED. The switch at the rear of the flashlight can operate this LED array in four (4) different modes. A single push of the button turns on the outer ring of six (6) LEDs in their full power mode for a High-Power Flood output. A second operation of the button (a double-push) reduces the light output of the outer ring of six (6) LEDs to a Low-Power Flood output. A third operation of the button (a double-push) turns the outer ring of six (6) LEDs off and turns on the larger, centrally located LED element. The centrally located LED element is very bright and provides a Spotlight Mode function for the flashlight. A fourth and final operation of the button (a double-push) turns on all of the LEDs (the outer ring of six (6) LEDs and the larger, centrally located LED element) in a Strobe Mode. The Strobe Mode can be used to attract attention in an emergency situation or to temporarily blind an attacker. Another push of the button will turn the flashlight off.When I first tried the flashlight I used a pair of rechargeable Lithium-ion D-Cell pattern batteries. These batteries are a relatively low-capacity battery (aka: a very cheap rechargeable lithium-ion battery) and the flashlight produced a flickering light when turned on. The flickering was present in all four (4) operational modes. I removed those batteries and replaced them with a pair of better-quality rechargeable Lithium-ion D-Cell pattern batteries with a higher capacity rating. The flashlight worked properly with these batteries. Next, I tried a pair of the old reliable Energizer Max alkaline chemistry battery cells and the flashlight worked perfectly and was considerably heavier. It really felt like a tool in your hands.I did apply a little white lithium grease to the threaded end of the battery barrel section, the rubber “O”-ring on the barrel, and the tail cap threads. The white lithium grease application will prevent galling of the threaded aluminum sections (male and female) and make the flashlight easier to assemble and disassemble over time. Additionally, the grease will protect the “O”-ring from damage.This flashlight is simple in its construction and its operation. While it is not capable of being recharged, that is one more thing that cannot break. It can use the replaceable alkaline chemistry batteries and will operate for a very long time. If one were to purchase the really good quality rechargeable Lithium-ion D-Cell batteries, the flashlight could effectively use rechargeable batteries instead of the non-rechargeable alkaline chemistry batteries. The flashlight is reasonably sealed against the weather, so that should not be a concern. Finally, the price of this flashlight is a bargain.I like this product very much.

A piece of the description on Amazon says "Simple Single Mode Operation Comes with a side switch for easy one-key on/off control. No complicated modes, bringing you stable and hassle-free lighting output at any time." This is not the case for the one that I got. There is no 'side switch' and when you press the on/off button it scrolls through several modes (which they have in pictures on the site: High, Low, Spotlight, Strobe.). To be more clear: if you press the on/off firmly once it turns on. Another push and it turns off. That is true. But, if you half-press the button, it will scroll through the different modes. And, when you press firm (to turn it on), it selects the next mode. Then, if you press it firmly which turns it off, and then on again, it will rotate again and select the next mode setting. The body is metal and heavy duty. The site says that without batteries it weighs .82 lbs and with 1.44 lbs. That's probably accurate. On high beam the description says it should last 3.5 hrs. I found that at 3 hrs the brightness dropped substantially. But, it continued to shine (I don't know, maybe 30-40 lumens) for almost another 40 hours before it was done. That impressed me. In a dark room that still made it a useable flashlight. During those first 3 hours it did get warm, but not at all uncomfortable.
