Extension Cord with On Off Switch

If you're like me and have decided to switch to outdoor string lights that are designed for year round use, then you'll know how convenient it is to use an outlet with a built in switch or a smart home switch to turn them on and off. I have older string lights that plug directly into the wall outlet and need to be pulled out of the socket to turn it off. It is pretty inconvenient, especially since the outlet is in a difficult to reach area. This six foot extension cord make it much more convenient to switch them on and off. Not only does it eliminate the need to reach down to pull the plug, it gives just enough length to easily switch it on and off. An additional benefit is that the switch is lit when the cord is powered on. This allows for confirming when there is live power and can be used to check if a breaker has tripped, or when there is a bad outlet that needs to be replaced. The 14 AWG wiring is made for heavy duty and long term outdoor use. It's also great for corded power tools when you want to verify when they are powered off.

Nothing about this cord feels poorly made. The switch is good and the plugs seem strong. It seems hefty enough to be actual 14 gauge wire. I wish it has a built-in breaker though. that would instantly make this more useful for me, since my house wiring is 12 gauge. So I don't put any heaters or other high power draw appliances or tools on it, unless it happens to be coming from a 15A protected power strip. But that's not a failing on the cord, that's the user not getting the right cord for their uses. So know what the right cord is to prevent that dangerous situation.Anyway, the price is where I take off a star. It's a 6ft cord. I can get a 6ft 14AWG cord for like $8. So why is this almost 3x the price? I guess the on/off switch? I think most people won't need that switch badly enough to pay that. And if they do, there are still 15%+ cheaper options on this site.I have a lot of cords, and there is literally nothing about this one that warrants paying on the higher side of the price range. So just something to consider you are looking at this one.

The control for a lamp beside my apartment work area ended up behind furniture, so I used this six-foot switched cord to move the on-and-off point somewhere reachable. Without it, turning the lamp off meant reaching into an awkward space or pulling the plug. I routed this cord around the side of the furniture and left the inline switch where I could reach it from the desk. That simple change is why this worked better for me than a plain extension cord. I can control the lamp normally without crawling underneath anything or repeatedly disturbing the receptacle.Six feet is a practical middle length. It provides enough flexibility to bring power around the side of a desk or cabinet, but it does not create the large bundle of extra cable that comes with using a long household extension cord for a short run. I still route it openly, protect it from chair wheels and pet traffic, and keep it out from under rugs. A switch is convenient, but it does not make poor cord placement safe.An inline switch adds another connection carrying the load, so I checked it during the first longer use. It operated cleanly without crackling, looseness, intermittent power, odor, or unusual warmth. I also make sure the connected plug fits firmly rather than sagging out of the receptacle. Those observations are more meaningful than an indicator light because they show how the cord and switch are behaving with the actual device attached.This is most sensible for a modest indoor load that benefits from frequent manual control, such as a lamp or decorative display. I kept it on the modest indoor lamp load and did not use it for a space heater, air conditioner, major appliance, damp location, or equipment with a high start-up demand. I also did not daisy-chain it or hide the switch under a rug. Convenience is the whole point, so the control should remain visible and easy to reach.The electrical rating should be matched to the connected load, and that matters more than the cord physically accepting a plug. I used it within the marked voltage and amperage limits with equipment appropriate for the cord configuration. The inline switch is for normal on-and-off control. I still unplug the equipment before servicing it, and I do not treat this as a permanent substitute for correctly located building wiring.

I got this so I could locate a countertop microwave in a convenient spot in my kitchen, which is nowhere near an outlet that could be reached by the appliance's cord. It's short enough so that there's not a lot of cord left to stash, and long enough to get the job done. I'd have preferred 12 gauge wire to the 14 gauge in this extension, bit it is rated at 1875 watts - way more than the oven pulls, and nothing else will ever be plugged into it. The on/off switch is handy if you're using this for holiday lights or the like, but in my application it will just stay on. It's sturdily constructed and rated for 12 amps continuous. The cord is ETL listed (not UL rated) and meets US standards for indoor use.

This extension cord with on/off switch exceeded my expectations. I was looking for a short extension cord and was delighted to find this one.I am using this extension cord inside an RV to extend the power cord on a portable induction cook top. I definitely wanted a very short course. So I don't have a lot of extra cable all over the kitchen. This one did the trick and was the perfect length.The design is very sturdy. The switch is rated for outside and does have rubber seals to make it very water resistant. I also noticed that the female connector grips very tightly to the extension cord. So they won't come apart easily.I love having the switch so I no longer have to keep plugging. And I'm plugging the cord every time I use the induction top. This extension cord is a good value, in my opinion.

This is a quality made outdoor extension cord with lighted on/off switch. I had only one negative about it to speak of. If you just want to lay it on the ground or floor, this works well. There is no built-in screw hole in the switch area to mount it to the wall and nothing on the back to mount it either. I removed one star for this because it would be nice if you could mount it to a wall or post or anything rather than just laying it directly on the ground, especially outdoors. I ended up using some cord fasteners to get mine up off the ground, but it would be so simple to add a screw hole or two to the inline switch for easy installation. Other than this issue, I think this is a 5-star cord. The lighted switch works great and is clearly visible. The quality is superb with excellent connections throughout. It looks very nice and works flawlessly. For this 6-foot-long version for $24, I think it is a good value for the money. I wouldn't hesitate to buy this durable and well-built cord again, and I do recommend it to anyone!
