PVC Pipe Threader Tool

This is a really useful little tool for working with plastic pipe. I like that it can create both internal and external threads, so you don’t need separate tools for each job. Being able to attach it to a drill also makes the process much quicker and easier than threading by hand.The alloy steel construction feels sturdy and durable, and the compact size makes it easy to keep in a toolbox without taking up much space. It works with several common types of 1/2-inch plastic pipe, making it handy for plumbing repairs and DIY projects.For the versatility and quality, I think it’s a great value for the price. A convenient tool to have on hand if you regularly work with PVC or other plastic piping.

This PVC threading set can thread a pipe in a pinch, but I wound up stripping the threads that I made more often than not. I was using a vice to hold and a standard drill for both internal (3/4" pipe) and external (1/2" pipe) threading. To be fair, I only did 3 or 4 test runs of each so these may prove better for threading with more practice.I think it's a game of dialing in the vice, the pressure you apply and the speed of the drill to cut the threads without stripping them. You really need to be centered when drilling so that you don't over-weaken an outer edge.In all of my attempts, I can say with confidence I have little confidence in using any of the pipes I threaded under pressure or water applications. As a quick join and glue up for say a clothes rack? Sure!Pros: can use a drill to run, nice it's two dies in one, easy to throw into your toolbox for emergenciesCons: the die falls out easily since it's being held in there by the force you're applying on the pipe. This makes it hard to center. It's too easy to cross-thread or strip threads because PVC is so soft. Even if you master the use of this, you still have a lot of burrs to clean up before use.If you run your drill too fast you can melt the threads from friction. You're taking material out of a structure so it will definitely introduce weakness.This works fine for thin-walled plastic or basic Schedule 40 PVC, but it would likely struggle on denser materials. Again, making thin-walled plastic or PVC thinner is a pick your poison situation.Overall, I think it's neat to be able to make your own threads. I think spending more time and materials on it will make for a better thread. Under pressure, I'd worry a lot about this because the threads weren't clean or pronounced enough to grip strongly. I'd consider it for gravity drain irrigation or other non-pressure projects, but in no way would I trust it for any plumbing-related use.Go slow, use a low speed on your drill, and zero your angle and hold it while you cut. If possible a vice and drill press are probably your best friends here.
