It looks good, better than the old one it is replacing. It seems I had a rather old model without the "protector". Fits my filter housing perfectly and runs city water without issue. The protector sleeve should help keep the main filter element clean which should extend the life. This filter is not particularly inexpensive but it is less costly than a name brand at an outdoor store.

I've used a Katadyn Hiker Pro for years, so I was interested to see how this replacement filter compared to the factory version.The first thing I noticed is that it actually looks better made than the Katadyn filter it replaced. More importantly, it fit my Hiker Pro exactly as it should.The box claims the filter has been tested by IAPMO R&T. That's apparently some kind of testing and certification organization, but I didn't dig into the details or try to verify the claim. I can only report what's printed on the packaging.At the end of the day, backpacking water filters are only one part of the equation anyway. My Katadyn pump is so old it says "PUR" on it, but it still works perfectly with this replacement.It appears near identical to the last Katadyn hiker replacement I purchased. Almost the same prefilter layer, but this is thinner and the edge unravels with handling. Almost held on with the same mesh but this is a longer piece and holds it more loosely. The weight of the old one is 109g while this one weights in at 90g. Maybe I have 20g of grime in there?It does crank into the same threads for a tight fit. That part is indistinguishable.I'm left with questions and the savings for this over the brand seems rather small.

I'll be honest, I always worry about buying water filters and whether or not they really do what they claim to do. This is even more true regarding off-brand filters like this replacement cartridge for Katadyn filter systems. But the thrifty part of me always wins out and it hasn't killed me yet.This replacement cartridge for the Katadyn Hiker Pro Filter System is the correct fit for that system. If one trusts it to perform like the genuine Katadyn cartridges, then it should work fine. I've included a photograph of a genuine Katadyn cartridge (left) and this cartridge (right) side-by-side. Note that my genuine cartridge was bought when the cartridge protector screen was "new" and came with it packed separate from the cartridge. This product comes with is preinstalled. In both cases the screen is a prefilter that can be removable to be cleaned of silt and debris that it keeps from clogging the actual filter.
