I've used another version of these CLLIGHTING new-construction mounting plates, and I actually prefer this design. The biggest improvement is the multiple pre-cut openings that accommodate several recessed-light sizes. That makes these much more versatile and considerably more beginner-friendly.Instead of having to precisely create the entire opening yourself, the different knockout sizes give you a clear starting point for the light you're installing. The measurement markings and adjustable mounting slots are also genuinely useful when you're trying to lay out multiple lights evenly.Another thing I noticed is how sturdy these feel, particularly around the smaller openings. With some universal mounting plates, removing material for a smaller fixture can leave you with something that feels flimsy or like it could wobble after installation. I don't get that feeling with these. The galvanized steel remains reassuringly rigid and feels like it's actually going to support the installation properly.You also get a lot of flexibility when the framing doesn't conveniently line up with exactly where you want the finished light. Between the adjustable slots, measurement markings and multiple fixture sizes, there's considerably less guesswork involved.The 24-pack makes the most sense for a larger renovation, new construction project or anyone doing multiple rooms. They're more substantial and versatile than the previous mounting plates I've used, and the design makes installation approachable even if you aren't someone who installs recessed lighting every day. These are the version I would choose between the two.

I have already installed around a dozen smart recessed LED lights in my house over the past couple of years, usually without mounting brackets because the finished drywall provided the support I needed.My pool room is different. The ceiling is still open with exposed 2x4 framing while I wait to install drywall, and that is where these mounting plates become extremely useful.I tested one plate with a 6-inch smart recessed LED light, and it provided a sturdy, secure mounting point that will allow me to position the light correctly now rather than trying to adjust everything later from above the finished ceiling.The galvanized steel construction feels very solid, and I like that the plates accommodate multiple recessed-light sizes.My only hesitation is the price. These are considerably more expensive than I expected mounting plates to be. That said, if you are doing new construction or installing recessed lights before drywall goes up, the convenience may easily justify the cost.If you are simply adding a recessed light to an already finished drywall ceiling, you may not need something like this at all.5 out of 5 stars.

I love absolutely everything about these except for the included screws! These were very easy to tin snip out the correct size we needed for our pancake lights and the ruler on the side is amazing for measuring and lining up. However these go under the sheetrock so you want them as thin and seamless as possible and then it comes wkth pan head screws that would leave bulges under the sheetrock. We swapped them out for roofing nails instead. So get yourself nails so you don't leave bulges all under youe sheetrock

We used these CLLIGHTING new construction mounting plates for installing recessed lighting, and they make getting the lights positioned correctly before the ceiling goes up considerably easier.The plates are sturdy enough to hold their position during installation and give you a defined location for each recessed light instead of trying to measure and cut everything after the drywall is installed. They are especially helpful when installing multiple lights and trying to maintain consistent spacing and alignment throughout a room.Installation is straightforward, and there is enough adjustment available to accommodate typical framing layouts. Once secured to the framing, the plate provides a solid mounting point and makes it easy for the drywall crew to know exactly where the fixtures belong.For new construction or a major remodel where the ceiling framing is exposed, these are well worth using. They take a little extra time during the rough in stage but can save considerably more time when it comes to installing and aligning the finished recessed lights.Simple product, solid construction, and it does exactly what it is supposed to do.

This is a nice metal layout template/ruler. The overall cut quality is better than I expected. The long slots, rectangular openings, and concentric cutout guides are cleanly cut, and the layout is useful for quick marking without having to measure and re-measure everything from scratch.One thing I really like about this unit is that it gives you a full selection of cutout sizes. That is a big advantage versus a lot of the competing versions, which are more limited. Having more sizes built into one flat template makes it much more useful as a general-purpose layout tool.The steel gauge and overall construction seem pretty in line with the industry. It is thin, but not flimsy in a bad way. It feels like a practical layout tool rather than a precision machinist tool. The cut edges and slots look reasonably clean, and the circular guide section is especially useful because it gives you multiple diameter references in one piece.Another nice thing is that it is not particularly sharp. The edges are cut cleanly enough, but they are not so sharp that it feels dangerous to handle. I would still use normal shop common sense, but I do not feel like this requires gloves just to pick up and use, which is a real practical advantage for a layout template.My biggest complaint is that the stamped ruler markings are not as deep or dark as some other versions from other manufacturers. They are there, and they are usable under good light, but they are fairly low-contrast against the metal finish. I would much rather see deeper stamped markings or darker markings because this is the kind of tool you may use in a shop, garage, jobsite, or under imperfect lighting.I also wish it had a few holes for self-tapping screws, mainly so you could potentially mount or locate distribution boxes more easily. To be fair, those boxes usually do not get firmly attached through a template like this anyway, but sometimes they can, and having a few extra mounting/reference holes would make the tool more flexible.I would not treat this as a high-end precision reference tool. For rough layout, template work, quick spacing, and repeatable marking, it seems very useful. For fine measurement work, I would still verify with a better ruler, tape, calipers, or square depending on the job.Overall, I like it. It is a simple, useful metal template with a lot of layout functionality built into one flat piece. The main upgrades I would want are deeper/darker markings and a few more mounting/reference holes, but the steel gauge, cut quality, edge finish, and range of cutout sizes are all solid for this type of tool. As a bonus, this includes button cap screws, if you choose to use them (they're not the lowest profile).

If you are going to pick this up I'd opt to get the variable one and not set yourself on just the 4in one. Some of the 4in lights if you dont plan on using drywall will be cantered/tilted to one side or the other. I mean, the lights are made to be used on drywall but if you're using drywall why would you need a bracket?The metal is pretty flimsy. It is easy to mount and the numbers on both sides does help you align it so it's centered. I used wood screws to attach the bracket instead of the included screws. With either type of screws I would recommend using a washer only because of how thin the metal plate is. As soon as the screw makes contact it wants to deform and warp. A washer should help keep this to a minimum.It holds the light in place just fine but some of the 4in lights wont fit which is why i said get the variable ones in case you already purchased your lights.You're not going to be able to use this on steel joist ceilings. The span is way too far for this unless you're going through the roof or build something for this to attach to.For exposed wood joist like pictured I think I will still use a small cutout of sheetrock so the light stay's centered.

I picked these up for new construction installs of 4" recessed lights. I was very pleased with what you get and what they charge for them.More and more homeowners are switching to not only spring clip recessed lights, but also dropping down to 4" instead of 6". So I picked these up for drywall templates,First, go into it knowing these are just templates for electricians and drywallers to mark locations and serve as cutout guides. A couple reviews talked about how flimsy these are, but they aren't meant to be structural. The lights are so lightweight nowadays, that the drywall is more than sufficient to carry the weight. These just help mark the location of the light install and to provide a metal guide for the drywaller's cutout tool so they can make perfect circles. I will say the metal does provide a little extra protection for the inside drywall edges so the spring clips don't tear anything up if you need to remove the light for painting or other reasons after install.The diameter is a perfect fit for a 4" light, and the guide does come with measurement markings on them so you can install a little quicker without having to bust out a tape measure for each one.While they include installation screws, they are kinda cheap and the heads don't recess cleanly. I switched to drywalls nails instead.Overall, these templates work very well, and are a great value for how many you get and what they cost. I plan on getting more of these when I run out.
