This Master Lock combo padlock is a good example of a versatile, easy-to-use lightweight lock for a variety of things that need a bit of security. Master Lock is well known for its reliability and quality. It is a brand I have always used for both indoor and outdoor uses.I like this combo lock. It is very easy to use. it is also, very easy to set your own combo.It is kind of big, as it is barrel shaped but its size is what makes it really easy to read the digits on the lock.The one major drawback of this lock is the tumblers. The digits/tumblers are right on top of each other and it makes it difficult to turn just one without turning the adjacent tumbler.Overall, it is a good lock and keeps my locker at work secure.

This one solves that: it uses letters instead of numbers, so the combo is an actual four-letter word that's far easier to remember.The default is "L-O-C-K," and honestly I don't feel I should have to change it just for her — but if you want to, the instructions to set your own four-letter word are simple. There are 10 letters on each ring, so your available words are limited to whatever those letters can spell. . That narrows things somewhat, but there are still plenty of options — I did run the letters on each ring using A.I., and it came back with over 1,000 possible four letter word combinations; not bad. If you lean on abbreviations, you can expand the possibilities quite a bit. The trade-off is that a word-based lock has fewer total combinations than a numeric one, but the payoff is that you'll actually remember it, which is the whole point.The body and shackle are solid metal, and the lock has a good heft — not cheap-feeling at all. Master Lock has been at this a long time and makes some excellent products.I could see these being great for kids, and the fun colors lend themselves to that too. Size-wise, it's bigger than a luggage lock but a little smaller than a traditional dial-pad lock, and it's far easier to open than those spin dials. I really disliked those dial locks in high school — especially when you were in a hurry to get to your next class, and every fumble just made it harder. This style fixes that. About the only easier solutions would be biometric or phone-tap locks, and those cost a lot more than this Master Lock model.

This is a solid Master Lock set if you want something for a gym locker, travel hostel security, storage cabinet, etc. Setting the combination was straightforward, although it is a bit annoying to move around.The locks themselves feel sturdy and well-made, which is pretty much what I expect from Master Lock (I’ve been using them since middle school!). They have a good weight to them and don’t feel like cheap novelty locks. That said, the number dials are a little stiffer and more annoying to line up than I expected. Sometimes I have to slow down and make sure each number is actually centered, which kind of defeats some of the convenience.Overall, I like the concept and the build quality is good, but these are best for indoor lockers or basic storage rather than anything high security. I also wouldn’t use them for luggage since they are bigger and bulkier than that. Still, if you need a few reusable combo locks and like the number roller setup, this is a pretty good option. This one brings back that same feeling, but with a really nice modern design.I went with the black finish, and I think it looks fantastic. The rounded body, polished shackle, white numbering, and overall shape give it a clean, substantial appearance. For something as utilitarian as a padlock, this is actually a remarkably good-looking design.The four combination wheels turn smoothly, the numbers are crisp and easy to read, and I much prefer being able to choose my own four-digit combination. No little key to keep track of, and no random factory combination that I’ll inevitably forget six months from now.Setting your own combination is also very easy. The lock arrives preset at 0-0-0-0. Open the shackle, use a coin in the slot on the bottom to move it into the reset position, select your new four-digit combination, turn the slot back to its original position, and you’re done. The instructions included with the lock are clear and easy to follow.The lock itself feels solid in the hand. It has a zinc body, hardened steel shackle, and an anti-shim locking mechanism. Everything about it feels well put together, from the smooth movement of the number wheels to the positive feel when the shackle locks into place.I’m not using mine for a school locker, but I can see this being useful on a gym locker, storage cabinet, toolbox, equipment case, or anywhere else you want the convenience of a combination lock without carrying another key.There are products that come and go, and then there are names that seem to stick around for generations. Master Lock is one of those names for me. The only disappointment was that you are limited to certain letters, so the word I originally wanted to use wasn't possible. Thankfully, Master Lock provides a large list of compatible four-letter words, which makes finding an alternative pretty easy.One thing I learned the hard way was about the size. Before purchasing, I asked an AI assistant if these could be used on luggage and was told they would work. After opening the package, it was obvious that wasn't really the case. They might work on a trunk, but they're much too large and heavy-duty for most luggage applications. In hindsight, I should have trusted the product description more than the AI.As expected from Master Lock, the quality is excellent. These locks are extremely sturdy, feel very solid in your hand, and inspire confidence. Nobody is casually getting one of these open. They are heavy-duty locks that seem built to last.My biggest complaint is that the letter wheels are harder to turn than I expected. While the word combination idea is great for people who have trouble remembering numbers, actually aligning the letters can be a little frustrating. I found it difficult to get the middle letters exactly where I wanted them without accidentally moving another wheel. Master Locks are of course the standard for padlocks. The spinning dials for combination locks have always been the subject of irritation because of the time it takes and how unforgiving they tend to be for missing the number a little bit. So actual number locks are convenient. The ones with numbers on the bottom are tiny and hard to turn, but this lock is different. I was surprised how substantial the body is. It’s easy to grab and hold, but of course if you’re looking for something slim, this isn’t it. The body is essentially a cylinder that is 1-½” in diameter and 2” tall without the shackle. The shackle itself gives you about ⅞” of space when it’s closed. The shackle metal is just a little bit thinner than our older regular spin Master Lock combo padlocks, but I can’t say if that actually makes any difference in its resistance to cutting. The number wheels are large and easy to turn, with a nice positive detent “click” for each number turned. It is still possible to accidentally turn an adjacent wheel while trying to set a number, but the larger dials make it easier to hold in place. Setting the combination is convenient and very easy. Just enter the current combination and open the shackle, then use a coin to turn a slot on the bottom of the lock to the set position. Put in the new combo, turn the slot back to normal, and close the shackle. Very straightforward. When you do put in the combination, the lock does require more of a pull to open it than I’m used to, maybe they did that to make sure you’re ready for it to open instead of suddenly releasing. Not hard, just very deliberate. Of course, unlike a normal dial padlock you need to remember to spin the numbers when you lock it since it doesn’t automatically make you spin and re-enter the numbers when you push it closed. Also, keep in mind this lock is only rated for indoor use.
