SDS Plus Carbide Cross Tip Rotary Hammer Drill Bits for Concrete and Masonry

This cross-tip design is very interesting but gives mixed results. The cross bit is not as aggressive cutting through concrete such as foundations or tilt up walls. On the other when a rebar is encountered the cut through time is faster with less chattering. It is that chattering effect that can break the drill bit carbide or damage your hammer drill. Also I noticed that the carbide did not turn purple after cutting through rebar, that is a good thing and indicates that less heat was generated in the cut through. I also wanted to mention that because these bits are less aggressive it equates into more perfect round holes in delicate materials such as reconstituted red brick. The cross-tip design does not clear out the hole as well as traditional two carbide bit drills, so it is very important that you back out the drill frequently when drilling deep to clean out all that dust before it becomes impacted behind the cross-tip bit and prevents you from removing the drill bit when finished. These cross-tip drill bits are sold in a pack of five around $3.40 per bit, that is very economical.

Recently I installed a metal fence by my pool and I used a larger Horivo SDS Plus bit to drill the holes for the anchors and it performed well. I have another project in mind and needed to drill some 1/4" holes in brick and concrete so I got the same brand again. These Horivo SDS Plus bits have a unique cross tip of carbide that is brazed to the body of the bit. A 4-cutter cross shaped tip features two secondary cutting edges that keep the bit centered, preventing it from walking or wobbling as you start drilling. This design also breaks up concrete faster than a two cutter type bit. I drilled some test holes in a two inch thick paver with a 20 volt cordless hammer drill and these did seem faster than a regular bit (see video). The two flute design is nice because drilling into masonry produces a lot of debris and that creates friction which can overheat the carbide tip and cause the braze to fail. The double flutes create two separate channels get clean out the dust and debris. Cleaning out this debris means that the bit is hitting the material you are drilling instead of grinding against the already broken up material. At the current price of $3.20 each for the 1/4" by 6" I consider these a real bargain.

This is a great set of bits, made of quality materials with a well designed four cutter tip. Having carbide on the business end of this drill ensures it will chew through brick, concrete and masonry with ease, as well as guaranteeing a long life. I got these for some holes I needed to drill in brick, and they went through it like butter. The fluted shaft does a great job extracting dust and debris as you can see in one of the pictures provided. I like that these come in a five pack as sometimes you can burn through concrete bits pretty quickly, so it’s nice to have some extras on hand, depending on how big your job is. I got the 6 inch bits, but wish I would’ve got the 8 inch as a couple of inches are taken up by the SDS end that goes inside the drill. My advice to everyone would be to get bits longer than you think you will need. The cost was $16 at the time of order, which is a great value for five 6 inch bits. You could spend that much for one namebrand bit, depending on the brand, so this is a no-brainer.

Looks to be another solid quality rotary hammer drill bits, for SDS Plus.A note on the 8 inch length, as most may have figured out by now, that length refers to the entire length of the drill bit, including the part that goes into the SDS Plus, so the actual drilling depth is closer to 6 inches. This is standard measurements across all SDS Plus bits, includes the make brand versions out there.These are a 4 bar carbide cutter for hopefully a more durable and faster cutting than the standard 2 bar carbide.New, they do fine… but the real test of a carbide bit is duration and how well they cut in old and cured concrete. For now I don’t have any complaints.I like the fact that the company has enough confidence in their product to put their name on the base of the bit. If the performance is poor, I imagine they would rather you forget what brand this is, and if it’s good, you know where to go to get more of them.Recommended buy

These are very good quality concrete bits. Notably, they are SDS for use in rotary hammer drills so they can really get the job done. The four-cutter carbide tip definitely provides faster and easier drilling in concrete or other masonry products. The 8 inch overall length provides 6 inches drilling depth and is a good size for most projects. You get 5 of these bits and while they do a great job, concrete drilling is hard on bits so it’s good to have several backups for when they will eventually wear out. And for the price of these 5 bits, they are a great value. Overall pleased with the quality and function of these bits and would recommend.

Summary: A great pack of heavy-duty concrete bits that drill through rebar just as well as my expensive single bit, saving me a ton of money.I recently bought a single, very similar drill bit and it cost me over $20. So, when I saw a five-pack of these in the $15 price range, which works out to exactly $3.00 per piece, I really wanted to try them and see if they were just as good.The reason the single bit I previously bought was so expensive was because it featured a four-bladed tip. This specialized design is built to pummel not only through tough concrete, but also cutting through rebar (reinforcing bar). Rebar is a high-strength, dense and tough, hitting it can instantly destroy standard masonry bits, as I learned the hard way. So these four-cutter bits become necessary for foundations and such. Anyway, I tried using these new bits on some foundations where I needed to anchor rebar into for a porch extension. I was pleasantly surprised that they worked just as well as my premium bit. I don't know if they will wear out any quicker in the long run, but the drill didn't seem to show much more wear after drilling five holes as the expensive one did; and it took about the same amount of time to drill. I think the performance is comparable to the single $20-$25 bit I bought before. Because of that, I am highly impressed and strongly recommend them.
