Countersink Drill Bit Set with Low Friction Depth Stopa few decades ago there were flip bit/ countersinks that were somewhat ubiquitous. but i never see them anymore. this seems to be from that family of tools without the flip feature. what this does. you can set up a truly positive stop for drilling countersunk holes prefereably in soft woods. there is a gub screw for the bit to countersink interface and a grub screw for the rotating depth ring. so you can adjust the drill bit depth and the countersink hole depth. this is great. the problem is in my opinion that without a drill press one cannot poosible drill a perfectly 90 degree hole from to angles. so your drill bit goes in, then once the stop hits it forces it to 90 on 2 planes. so there is a chance your countersunk hole will be not perfectly centered and 90 on two planes. this is a design flaw in my opinion. or maybe the budget level of this tyupe of tool. i guess i would want the rotating ring to engage sooner then drop with a spring and stop at the detemined depth. i mean an exaggerated example would be to start your hole so out of square that once the ring hits the bit breaks becasue it forces it to square and the hole is not. hence the reason why i say this is for softwoods. soft woods allow for a little operator error. drilling purpleheart or aluminum all of which the steel involved can easily do, will not allow for holes out of square when the ring hits and this will likely snap a drill bit that is extended too far. but these are fussy concerns. aside from some persnicketty old man yelling at clouds problem, it is a fine little set for the average woodworker.

Some of these products come with terrible cases, this is not one of them. My only complaint about the case is that when you have the adapter tightened down into the drilling position and try to put it in the case the 1/4" apex shaft hits the phillips bit in the case so you have to basically loosen the whole adapter each time you put it away.I think that the design could be improved because you have to slide the big round guard to the right position so that you can fit the allen key in a slot through it to tighten or loosen the bit or countersink shaft which can be annoying. If you are planning on constantly changing bits and countersinks this might get annoying but most people really don't change them that much, at least I never have.

I have been an avid amateur woodworker since I was old enough to hold a screwdriver. I've built about 25% of the furniture in our home, and I'm always looking for another project. So I've got a pretty good eye for a quality tool. Countersinking screw heads, especially on furniture items, is always a challenge. You need to get a clean countersink, and the depth has to be consistent. If the screw is going to be visible, it should be flush with the surface of the wood. I will frequently make plugs to insert over the screw head for a nice finish on furniture. And depth control in these situations is really important. This is the perfect tool for the job. Other than using a drill press, this is the best I have seen for precisely controlling the depth without any damage to the surface of the wood at all. A depth collar on a countersink works well; however, it can rub on the surface of the wood, marring the finish. This is a very clever design. The pilot screw and countersink ride in a housing which is supported by a ball bearing raceway. Once the stop hits the surface of your wood, it is not going to spin. An O-ring grips the surface of the wood and the bit, and the countersink spins freely in the housing. Absolutely no marring and a good clean cut. There are multiple sizes in the kit, and they are easily interchangeable. It also comes with an Allen wrench for precisely setting the depth of the countersink. The hex shank fits nicely in a drill or power driver. The first photo shows the results on a soft pine board. The second was done on an extremely tough bamboo flooring board. I was quite happy with both results. The photos would suggest a small amount of chipping at the surface; however, they are highly magnified, and it really isn't noticeable at all to the naked eye. I've used all sorts of countersinks in my woodworking. This is by far the best I've found.

I’ve used another budget countersink set for quite a while, and it worked okay, but it had one major problem: the depth stop collar was made from white plastic, probably ABS, and it would leave circular marks around the countersink hole. It even marred quarter-sawn white oak, which was frustrating because the whole point of using a countersink set is to make cleaner, more professional-looking holes.This set is much better.At first glance, it looks similar to my old set, and the case even looks nearly identical, but the depth stop is the big upgrade here. This one feels much sturdier, and it has a rubber cushion on the end that contacts the workpiece. That makes a huge difference. It stops cleanly without leaving that ugly circular ring around the hole.The bits themselves also feel like a step up in quality. The metal feels better, the machining looks cleaner, and the whole set just feels more refined than my previous budget version. The countersinks cut cleanly and make it easy to get repeatable depth, which really improves the final look of a project when all the screws sit at the same depth.I tested it on a scrap piece of 2x4 pine. Since pine is soft, there was a tiny bit of tear-out, but overall the countersink was still clean and would easily sand out. On better hardwood, I expect it to perform very well.Adjustment is simple with the included hex wrench, and the set includes multiple sizes for different screw shank diameters. It also comes with a double-ended Phillips bit, which I probably don’t really need, but it’s a nice little extra.My old set did come with an extra depth stop collar, while this one only includes one, but honestly this collar feels sturdy enough that I’m not worried about it.Overall, this is a great countersink set. The non-marring cushioned depth stop is the standout feature, the bits cut well, and the depth control is consistent. I’ll be using this set instead of my old one from now on.

I mainly use this to build cabinets and shelving. I was concerned before I ordered this that the drill bits would be fragile and prone to breaking. That concern turned out to be completely unfounded. I've used every bit repeatedly and they've made perfect, sharp counter sunk holes every single time, all at various depths. I can honestly say that I'm creating higher quality pieces because of this bit set.
