Corner Clamps for Woodworking

Interesting corner clamps. I've never used this type of clamp before now. They work well and provide a great clamp for picture frames and the like.

First, on the concept itself: I have a few sets of these of different makes, and they're unbelievably handy when you're gluing up a square joint. They seem indispensable once you've used them once. Elminates the constant checking of the corners with your square, making it almost foolproof. So, if you don't have a set of these, get them now; you'll use them. They're the sort of thing that you will wish you had in just the right moment.Second, on this model: no complaints. They seem and work identically to the others I own. The parts are true square, and the pieces fit nicely. The tension is good, and everything is well machined.What makes this set stand out is the case. There is almost no chance of losing a part (everything has its right place). The tight-fitting foam keeps sanding sawdust out and the pieces clean for the next time you need them to work without a lot of prep. The case also is rugged enough to transport or, heaven forbid, lend.At the current price ($18), this is money well spent. Overall, I'm perfectly happy with this. Five stars.

As a meticulous woodworker, I am incredibly impressed with this 90-degree clamping square set. When I first unboxed it, I was completely caught off guard by the heavy-duty plastic storage case and its perfectly snug, custom-cut foam insert with finger holes. The level of presentation and organization is fantastic, making it an excellent gift for any woodworker. The squares themselves are solid, thick, CNC-machined aluminum with a beautiful red anodized finish that stands up perfectly to daily workbench abuse.In actual use, the accuracy is spot on. The squares sit perfectly flush against both inside and outside corners, preventing panels from pulling out of square during glue-ups. This set is a total lifesaver when constructing drawers, cabinet carcasses, shelves, and smaller boxes where even a microscopic alignment error can ruin a project. The engraved metric and imperial scales are incredibly sharp and easy to read. I’ve been using this 90-degree clamp square set for woodworking projects, and it has made cabinet, box, and frame assembly much easier to keep square. The aluminum squares feel solid without being unnecessarily heavy, and the CNC-machined edges are clean and precise. I'm a hand tool woodworker, and maybe a bit of a tool snob. Properly restored Stanley or Lie-Nielsen comprise the bulk of my woodworking tool array. If that wasn't enough, by day I'm a watchmaker. I'm not saying these are on par with the aforementioned, but I know nice tools when I see them. When I opened the cardboard box, I wasn't expecting a sturdy plastic case (it had been a while since I looked at the product listing, and forgot about it). When I opened the case, I wasn't prepared for the tightly cut foam with finger holes and everything. I actually said "Wow!". The tools themselves are thick, sturdy anodized aluminum with metric and imperial measurements on them. It's a simple enough thing that there's not much to go wrong. The plastic knobs COULD be a bit more sturdy, but at 1/8" thick, it's not like they're fragile. They'd probably have to be solid to be any more sturdy, and that's really just wishful thinking. There are no casting marks to indicate what type of plastic they are, but I suspect you'd have to be pretty abusive to kill them. If you did, it wouldn't be too difficult to rig up an alternate means of tightening the clamps. Speaking of abuse, the marks on the main pieces are lasered through anodization, and not very deep. Some abuse could scratch through the anodization and make the marks illegible fairly easily. The biggest nit I can pick is that there are no instructions or diagrams. It's hardly rocket science, but if I haven't messed with it in several years and I'm tired, it's not hard to imagine having to stroke my beard for a minute or two to remember how it's intended to work.

If all goes according to plan, my workshop will be ready to use within a week. Anxious to get back to playing with saws, drills, sandpaper, and wood. Many of my projects involve boxes of all sorts. Think picture frames, drawers, furniture, etc. The corner clamps I had before the move seem to have decided to stay back. Clamps as good as these are essential (at least for me) in making sure that all my corners are exactly 90 degrees. These are simple to use, sturdy, and very accurate. I’ve tested them on some pieces of wood and know they’ll serve me well as I begin to construct again.

This is a pretty well packaged set for smaller and medium sized jobs such as drawers, shelves, miscellaneous repairs and so on.The case is better than I expected and is useful especially for keeping the clamp parts together - though I can see that the squares might stay out of the case as they are pretty useful overall for checking whether joints and angles are square. The right angles are extremely well printed, with flawless red anodizing. I might wish for the measuring rules to also be along the inside edges, but for the price the entire set is good value.I anticipate using these for some shelf repairs and when the weather is cooler for some outdoor furniture needing reinforcement and squaring up. Whether the clamps will be large enough for that type of job will remain to be seen but for indoor smaller jobs these are very suitable.Overall, this set might make a good gift idea for someone just getting into furniture repairs or cabinetry and woodworking since it would allow them to keep all the parts together and organized, and the right angles are light and well marked. For someone more experienced, they are probably going to find the case less useful as it is - for example, wearing gloves the tight fitting foam makes it fiddly to remove some items.So for a newcomer without tools this rates a 5 for smaller jobs and gaining experience, for those accustomed to repairs it's very handy if you don't already have smaller clamps and rates a 4 for the good quality lightweight right angles. Overall I went with 5 on the basis it's a good set for smaller or medium jobs, the clamps might be the weak part over the long term, and only experience will tell.
