I picked up this Sylvania LED light bulbs, and the package we received contained four 5W LED bulbs, as it doesn't hurt to have extra lightbulbs around the house. They use the traditional A19 pear-shaped design with the standard E26 screw-in base, so there is nothing unusual or proprietary about the physical format. They produce a traditional 2700K warm, soft-white light that is very similar in color to the familiar light produced by an incandescent tungsten-filament bulb.At 5 watts, each bulb produces 450 lumens, which is roughly equivalent to a traditional 40W incandescent bulb. In other words, these are intended as ordinary general-purpose household bulbs rather than especially bright lights. If you are replacing a 40W incandescent bulb, the light output should be in approximately the same range while using considerably less electricity.The bulbs are branded Sylvania, which is a familiar and longstanding name in the lighting business. Sylvania was once associated with the German company Osram, but the Sylvania brand is now controlled by MLS Ltd., a Chinese company, following its acquisition in 2018. I mention that simply as background on the brand and ownership; ultimately, what matters to me as a consumer is how the bulbs perform.From a physical standpoint, these bulbs look remarkably conventional. They have frosted glass and a stamped metallic screw base, giving them the appearance of a traditional household light bulb rather than the plastic-heavy appearance of some LED bulbs. They are also dimmable, which makes them more versatile than inexpensive non-dimmable LED bulbs.The specifications are respectable. They are rated at 90 CRI (Color Rendering Index), which is at the lower end of what is generally considered the high-CRI range. That means they should provide reasonably accurate and natural-looking colors, although there are LED bulbs available with even higher CRI ratings. They are also wet rated, meaning they can be used in damp or enclosed environments where the appropriate fixture allows for that use. That makes them potentially useful in locations where an ordinary indoor-only bulb would not be suitable.Sylvania rates these bulbs for 25,000 hours of operation and markets that rating as a "double life" product. The packaging also uses a figure of 22 years. There is an interesting bit of marketing math behind that number. Twenty-five thousand hours of continuous operation is actually only a little under three years. The 22-year figure comes from assuming the bulb is operated for approximately three hours per day. That is a common industry convention and is not necessarily misleading, provided you understand what the number represents. Still, consumers could easily read "22 years" and assume the bulb will physically last 22 years under any circumstances, which is certainly not what the rating means.So, is this a good light bulb?My answer is that it is probably a pretty standard light bulb—and I mean that as a compliment. There is nothing particularly revolutionary about it, but there doesn't need to be. It has a conventional shape and base, pleasant warm light, reasonable brightness, good color rendering, dimming capability, a long rated life, and a design that makes it useful in a variety of applications.Will it actually last 22 years? That is much harder to say. I would have considerably more confidence in that claim for a bulb installed in a utility closet that gets turned on occasionally than I would for one installed in a kitchen, bathroom, porch, or other location where it is exposed to heat, moisture, frequent switching, or long periods of continuous operation. The 25,000-hour rating is useful, but real-world conditions matter, and the 22-year figure is based on a relatively modest three hours of use per day.In fact, I think these bulbs may be particularly well suited for outdoor applications where the fixture permits their use. The relatively low 450-lumen output makes them less glaring than many brighter outdoor LEDs, the 2700K color temperature produces a warm and inviting light rather than the harsh blue-white appearance of 5000K "daylight" bulbs, and the wet rating gives them an advantage in damp environments.I would not buy these bulbs because I expect them to literally survive for 22 years under every conceivable condition. I would buy them because they appear to be conventional, reasonably well-specified LED bulbs that provide warm, comfortable light while consuming only 5 watts. If they last anywhere close to their rated life, that's a pretty good result.And as for whether they will actually last 22 years: they might. They almost certainly will in some applications, and considerably less likely in others. But then again, it might be a mistake to plan my lighting around what will still be working 22 years from now. I might not either.

You really can't go wrong with Sylvania when it comes to a great quality light bulb, and this four pack is a great value! I've used Sylvania bulbs for years, so I feel confident putting these into fixtures throughout my home.One of my favorite things about these is the 2700K soft white color. I'm personally not a fan of the harsh, blue-toned light that some LED bulbs give off inside the home, and these have that much warmer, softer glow that makes a room feel cozy and inviting. They're still plenty bright for everyday use, and I also LOVE that they're dimmable so I can adjust the lighting depending on the room and time of day.I'm especially interested to see how long the Double Life LEDs actually last. I'm using these in some fixtures that are high and difficult to reach, specifically because I DON'T want to be climbing up there to replace bulbs all the time! With the advertised 25,000-hour lifespan, I'm hoping I won't have to think about changing them for a very long time.Overall, these are exactly what I want in an everyday household bulb: warm light, good brightness, dimmable, energy efficient, and hopefully extremely long lasting. For a four pack from a brand I already trust, I think they're a great value and would definitely recommend them!

With that in mind, I'm very happy with these bulbs.Pros:⦁ My bulbs were pretty well protected, and they arrived in perfect condition.⦁ They fit my standard E26 lamp, and have the size and shape of a typical A19 bulb.⦁ The temperature of the light is typical "soft white:" yellowish and easy on the eyes. In my photo with two lamps, this bulb is on the right, and a "daylight" bulb is on the left.⦁ There's no start up delay, no flickering, and no other unexpected annoying problems.⦁ This product has an ETL certification stamp, so I feel safe using the bulbs in my home.⦁ The price, $17.99 for the 4-pack when I ordered them, is very competitive with big box stores that are selling the same product.Cons:⦁ These bulbs are a high wattage, and they do get hot pretty quickly when in use. Not all light bulbs are created equal, speaking from experience. Budget bulbs tend to be a little off in either color or light output. I know this because I’ve mixed new bulbs from different budget brands in the same space, all supposedly the same color temperature and lumen output and there’s almost always one that looks noticeably different. Luckily, Sylvania isn’t some random budget brand. They’ve been making lighting products for decades, and I’ve happily used their bulbs alongside the other big brands.These are fairly true to their 2700K rating. Sylvania calls it Soft White though I’d describe it as a warm light. It’s perfect for an evening on an outdoor deck, which is where I’m using them here. Time will tell when it comes to longevity but I have other Sylvania LEDs that have been going strong for more than two years so I’m hopeful.I’ve also given these a pretty favorable setup since the bottom of the fixture is open. Heat is one of the things that can shorten the life of LED bulbs, especially in fully enclosed fixtures where it has nowhere to go. An open fixture with the bulb facing upward would probably be ideal since heat rises, but facing downward in an open fixture like this should still allow considerably better ventilation than a fully enclosed one. If your bulbs constantly fail and you're like... this says 100,000 hours and it only lasted 9 months! That's a possibility why.

The evolution of light bulbs in recent years has been an interesting one that now seems to have come full circle. For generations before the "energy efficiency" bulb trend, if you went to buy a basic light bulb, you got a bulb that was a standard lamp (E26) base, generally frosted glass, dimmable, at least somewhat ok with moisture and what we now call "soft white." And they were basic bulb shapes and not too expensive. With the advent of first CFLs and then LED bulbs though, these long term "basics" of light bulbs could no longer be assumed with bulbs in different shapes, sizes, weights, capabilities and so forth (particularly dimming was a problem for many years).These bulbs - from Sylvania, a long-term and well-known purveyor of light bulbs - look exactly like... 40W BASIC bulbs from years ago. They're frosted glass, dimmable, wet-rated and soft white and they have a basic E26 lamp base. They seem like they will be long-lived as that's a basic tenant of an LED bulb. They're very well made but look shockingly like an incandescent bulb, which is great for a lamp or any fixture where the bulb will be a bit exposed - not like other LED / CFL bulbs that look very specifically like an energy efficient bulb. The light they put out is a nice soft white and appropriate to a 40W class of bulb - but using only 5W of power. And because they use a standard E26 / lamp base, they're easy to install / remove. Getting 4 bulbs here at the current (as of this writing) price is a great deal as well, particularly given the energy savings and long life.So if you'd like to save some energy (or a lot of energy - over 87% energy savings) without investing a lot up front, replacing your old bulbs with these is a great way to go. Okay, I will admit up front I'm not a big light bulb connoisseur--I sort of view them as a bit of a commodity, so while it's nice that these bulbs have the Sylvania brand name, what I look for in a bulb is mainly color temp, brightness and price point/affordability. It's nearly impossible to determine bulb longevity up front, and I sure don't track the hours on each of my bulbs to see how they hold up over thousands of hours of run time, so unless they fail very quickly, I can't really comment on any of my bulbs in this regard.What's to like about these bulbs? First off, they look like traditional incandescent bulbs with a full frosted glass globe. Unlike some inexpensive LED A19 bulbs, they don't have that annoying large plastic base that extends partway up the glass globe, causing the light not to radiate outwards in a full sphere. Second, these are ETL listed. Maybe that's overkill for a light bulb, but I personally like the idea of making sure that every device that uses line voltage (i.e. 120 or 240 volts) is UL or ETL listed. Better to be safe than sorry. Lastly, they do put off a nice warm glow given their 2700K color temp; I much prefer a warm light to the cold blue light that sometimes can accompany some LED lighting.What's not to like about these bulbs? First, they're pretty expensive. At the time I ordered these, the four pack was a penny shy of $17, so about $4.25 per bulb. At that price, you can find reputable bulbs with comparable or better light output and additional features like the ability to select between multiple color temps. Second, in comparing these bulbs side by side with another brand's 9 watt 800 lumen bulb, this bulb (which should be brighter) doesn't appear to be any brighter and even looks like it might be a little dimmer. Some of that may be caused by how the bulbs radiate/direct the light. It's certainly not dim, but in comparison, this 11 watt (75 watt equivalent) just didn't put out as much light as I would have expected.

The color index is 90 CRI, which is at the bottom of the high end, and they are wet rated, meaning they can be installed in damp or enclosed environments. They are rated at 25,000 hours, and marketed as double life. They use the figure 22 years to represent that 25k hours, while there are actually about 25k hours in 3 years. They get 22+ years by assuming the light is in use 3 hours a day. (This is an industry standard intended to bring truth to marketing--you be the judge.)Is this a good light bulb? Well, it's probably a standard light bulb and that's good. Will it last for 22 years? Almost definitely in a utility closet, but a lot less likely in the kitchen or outside if you leave your lights on overnight. Speaking of outside, this might be an excellent light for outside use because it is dim, 2700k instead of 5000k so not daylight balanced, and damp rated. It might not last 22 years, but I might not either.
