I recently bought a Santa Maria barbecue that utilizes small pieces of wood to cook. I initially started splitting wood with a small hatchet and hammer, but quickly learned that it was a fairly dangerous process. Because of that I looked for a splitting wedge that could be mounted that’s how I found the High Flame Firewood kindling splitter.Pros:Well-made. Heavy duty steel with welded in supports.Nice Powder Coat it finish.Comes pre-drilled to mount on a solid surface (log).The splitting edge comes with a protective cover to prevent cut while not in use.Perfect size to split kindling.Cons:While not a con if used as intended, this is specifically to split kindling. There is not a cage surrounding the splitter therefore you need to hold the wood while impacting the splitting surface. Attempting to split larger logs on this would be quite dangerous. Just for information.Overall opinion:For my specific use, splitting kindling, this is perfect. It allows me to split smaller pieces of log into kindling that are just the right size to use on my Santa Maria barbecue. This would also be a great splitter to make kindling for a campfire.This is a great item if used as intended. If you use it for the purposes, I have described above I would highly recommend.

I have a bunch of large Ash logs from the dead trees I have been taking down on my property. Ash is a very dense wood, and while it does split just fine once dry, the bigger pieces can be a little tricky if you are using an ax. I picked this up to help finish off some of those large pieces that I got started with my splitting ax. I attached it to the top of a large stump using the included screws. Over time it probably will need the screws replaced and I'm not entirely sure how well this will actually weather in the outdoors. It is painted to help mitigate against rust, but driving logs down on top of it is going to wear away that paint and it will certainly need touch-ups. But for now, it seems to be in good condition and it is quite sturdy with the welds looking to be pretty well done. For large logs that I was able to start to split but didn't go all the way through, I then place them on the sledge and use a sledgehammer to drive them down onto it which usually finishes the job.To be clear, wow the listing title suggests this is for creating kindling, I don't really think it is as ideal for that. I mean, you could absolutely put a split log on this and then drive it down to break off smaller pieces. That would absolutely work. The thing is, there are better kindling splitters for that which have a metal ring built around the top that holds a split log in place and also doesn't necessarily need to be bolted down so those ones can be brought camping and the integrated metal ring on those also serves as something of a safety device to prevent someone from falling on the sharp wedge at the campsite. This, to me, is a splitting tool for use with medium to larger logs. It does come with a rubber blade guard that is certainly better than nothing, but even with the blade guard on the wedge comes to a narrow point and anyone falling onto that will be seriously injured, so make sure this is not in an area that receives foot traffic. Price-wise, it was listed for $29.99 when I ordered it which seems reasonable enough. That is certainly less than what I paid for a good splitting ax, but you would still need some sort of heavy hammer to use with this, or a splitting all would probably suffice. So it really comes down to whether or not the wood you plan on splitting typically requires an additional method for finishing it. If the wood is already thoroughly dried and can be split easily with an ax this might not be necessary, and as I said before I think there are better options just for creating kindling. But, it does function just fine for how I need it. I've had no issues splitting the larger ash logs and the wedge tip seems plenty sharp. Since I'm only using it for logs that I have already started to split I have not had any issues keeping the log balanced on the wedge.

A tree fell in my backyard, so I was trying to figure out how to split all my new wood. I had used an axe several times but I was looking for something a bit “safer.”I completely roughed it putting everything together, but it came with everything I needed to get it secured onto another log that I used as the base. At first I was having a hard time just due to not having a heavy enough hammer (who would’ve guessed how many sizes of sledgehammers there are,) but once I got that part figured out it was actually fairly easy. I was able to get a ton of smaller pieces taken care of really well, with the biggest size I tried shown in the photo below. I am very happy with this!

I enjoy chopping wood, so when I saw a new way to split logs via this wedge I thought I would give it a try.So, you have to kind of slam the log onto the wedge which takes a good amount of force for it to chill there on its own after.Then you have to smack it with a sledgehammer.I don’t know, it feels more cumbersome and you have to reset the log more often.Does it work? Yeah… but I just like the smooth twack of an axe (maul) better.
